According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a 50cm-high tsunami struck Hachijo Island, one of the islands in the Izu archipelago, about 40 minutes after the earthquake. The agency predicted that the tsunami could reach 1 meter in height and urged residents to stay away from coastal areas.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which administers the area, the Izu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands further south comprise about a dozen inhabited islands with a total population of approximately 24,000 as of last year.
Japan lies on four major tectonic plates. The country experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes each year, most of which are minor.
