Many localities are harvesting rice early.

Currently, the spring rice crop is entering its ripening stage. Following the principle of "better to harvest while the rice is still green than to let it ripen too much in the field," farmers throughout the province are concentrating their manpower and mobilizing machinery to harvest and clear the land in preparation for the summer crop. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the average rice yield this year is still around 60 quintals/hectare, equivalent to last year.

As soon as the rice ripens, harvest it immediately.

At this time, the main rice crop has begun to ripen, and in some localities that planted early, such as Son Duong, Chiem Hoa, and Lam Binh, the rice has already turned reddish-brown. Currently, people are taking advantage of the time to urgently harvest the ripe rice to speed up the land preparation for the next crop within the best timeframe.

Farmers in Kim Phu commune ( Tuyen Quang city) are busy harvesting the spring rice crop.

Ms. Dang Thi Binh, from Nhat Tan village, Thien Ke commune (Son Duong district), shared that the heavy rain from May 22nd to 24th caused flooding that submerged the entire village's rice fields. Her family had 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of TBR 225 rice. Because the rice was in the grain-filling stage, the water level reached the neck of the rice panicles, causing her family great anxiety. Fortunately, the water receded quickly, and as soon as it subsided, the family mobilized manpower to harvest the entire area. This season, the family's rice yield only reached 1.8 quintals per sao.

Nang Kha is one of the leading localities in Na Hang district implementing a model of planting the same rice variety and type in the same field, covering a total area of over 240 hectares. The rice varieties chosen by the farmers include BC 15, Nhi Uu 838, and Thai Xuyen 111… Ms. Ly Thi Loan's family in Na Reo village, Nang Kha commune, said: "This year's harvest was good, so as soon as we harvested the spring rice, we immediately mobilized machinery to plow and harrow. This season, we planted 1,700 m2 of Nhi Uu 838 rice, strictly adhering to the land preparation, care, and pest management procedures based on biological and organic methods that we had been trained in. At the same time, we used biological products of natural origin. This is a safe, environmentally friendly rice cultivation technique that is good for health, and will ensure higher rice prices and stable market demand."

In several communes such as Tan An, Hung My, Tan Thinh, Yen Nguyen, Hoa Phu (Chiem Hoa district); and Tho Binh (Lam Binh district), the spring rice harvest is quite bustling. Fields of rice, heavy with grain and still green leaves, are being harvested urgently by the people. This spring, Tan Thinh commune (Chiem Hoa district) planted over 160 hectares of rice. According to local residents, the rice has few pests and diseases, with only localized damage in some areas. Based on the commune's inspection and assessment, the average yield for the entire commune is estimated at 61 quintals/hectare. Many households in the commune have proactively used combine harvesters to harvest their rice, ensuring the progress of the summer crop production.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, this year's spring crop saw concentrated planting, and pest and disease forecasting was very good. However, this spring season experienced the most unfavorable weather in history. The lack of rain during the four months of production somewhat affected the growth and development of crops, especially rice. Furthermore, during the rice heading stage, heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds caused significant damage to rice crops in several regions and localities.

Get started on crop production right away!

Alongside the spring harvest, the agricultural sector is directing localities to disseminate information and encourage people to quickly prepare the land and ensure sufficient fertilizers and supplies are available for the summer crop production according to the best time frame.

People in Yen Nguyen commune (Chiem Hoa district) are harvesting their early spring rice crop.

In some localities with a tradition of planting a third crop, people are accelerating land preparation to sow the next crop. In Yen Nguyen commune (Chiem Hoa district), the sound of plows resounds throughout the fields. Mr. Vu Van Thang, from Khuon Khoai village, said that because the time between crops is short, he has to work hard from morning to night to bring the machine to the fields to prepare the land. Thanks to this, his family has finished preparing nearly 3,000 square meters of land. Along with land preparation, the family is actively doing a good job of cleaning the fields and weeding to limit sources of pests and diseases.

These days, across the fields of Hong Thai, Da Vi, and Yen Hoa communes (Na Hang district), farmers are busy preparing the land for planting the summer rice crop. Mr. Chau Van Bich, Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Vi commune, shared: "Most of the rice fields in the commune are located on high mountain slopes such as Na Puc, Na Pin, Ban Tang, Ban Am… Therefore, farmers only plant the summer rice crop. To ensure yield and production, the commune has directed people to prepare the land and fertilizers well, focusing on planting within the best time frame; and to carry out care and pest control to create favorable conditions for the rice plants to grow and develop well."

Comrade Nguyen Dai Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: This year, due to the leap month of June, the planting schedule between the spring and autumn crops will be far apart. This is a very good condition for farmers to clean their fields. Farmers need to cut straw and use biological products (Sumitri, Trichoderma, AT Bio-Deromposer…) to treat straw and plant residues, avoiding poisoning the crops. Instead of using many rice varieties like in previous years, each field should allocate 2-3 main varieties, choosing those with high yield and quality; resistance to pests, diseases, and lodging; and implement concentrated planting to facilitate pest and disease management and the application of advanced techniques. Because the production interval between the spring and autumn crops is very short, if farmers use susceptible varieties, pests and diseases residing in the fields from the spring crop can easily infect, develop, and cause damage. Seed supply companies and agricultural and forestry service cooperatives are planning to prepare reserve seed supplies for areas that are likely to be flooded.
