Dr. Pham Van Giao, Director of the Institute of Applied Psychological and Educational Sciences, delivered a speech.

Dr. Pham Van Giao, Director of the Institute of Applied Psychological and Educational Sciences, shared this with a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper on the sidelines of the 3rd anniversary celebration of the Institute of Applied Psychological and Educational Sciences, which took place today, April 6th, in Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr. Pham Van Giao, a Master's degree holder, pointed out a common phenomenon in modern life, amidst the technological boom: family members have little time to care for and support each other. Due to busy work schedules, many parents lack the time to talk to, listen to, and understand their children, while children also keep pace with societal changes and developments. Many children are exposed to technology early on, lacking close family supervision. Therefore, the pressures of life, family, and studies gradually push children away from their parents. Consequently, negative attitudes among young people are not detected and addressed in a timely manner, creating increasingly favorable conditions for the development and manifestation of negative behaviors.

Dr. Pham Van Giao also acknowledges that students today face many pressures from studying, exams, and issues such as school violence, thereby increasing the risk of developing depression, nervous tension, and anxiety disorders, which are extremely dangerous.

In practice, through working with and listening to many students' stories, the Director of the Institute of Applied Psychological and Educational Sciences stated that many young people face significant pressure from their parents' expectations. While parents are not interested in their children's journey but only in results and grades, these students are lacking the support and resources from their parents. Many experience psychological crises, exceeding their tolerance limits, exhibiting symptoms such as frequent fear, nightmares, irritability, discomfort with surrounding sounds and noise, and a lack of enjoyment in studying…

The 3rd anniversary celebration of the Institute of Applied Psychological and Educational Sciences took place on April 6th.

In his speech at the April 6th commemoration ceremony, Mr. Giao stated: "The depression epidemic has become a serious problem in schools and society today. The phenomenon of depression among students is becoming increasingly complex, and in some cases, it has exceeded their own capacity, leading to many other regrettable consequences."

Dr. Pham Van Giao, a Master of Science in Medicine, cited some noteworthy figures: Globally , out of 1.2 billion adolescents, an estimated 10-20% suffer from mental health problems. In Vietnam, the number of adolescents experiencing mental health issues is 30%, especially during puberty, which is 1.5 to 2 times higher than the global average. The rate of mental health impairment is high, ranging from 8% to 29%.

According to a national epidemiological survey conducted in 10 out of 64 provinces/cities, approximately 12%, or about 3 million children and adolescents, experience mental health problems. Statistics from the Institute of Mental Health - Bach Mai Hospital show that in Vietnam, about 30% of the population suffers from mental disorders, with depression accounting for 25%. Each year, between 36,000 and 40,000 people commit suicide due to depression in our country. According to a UNICEF report, at least 3 million young people in Vietnam face psychological and mental health problems, but medical intervention and necessary support only reach about 20% of the total. A survey conducted in Ho Chi Minh City showed that 6% of the population suffers from depression, with a trend towards younger ages, particularly an increase in the number of people aged 15-27.

According to Master of Science and Doctor Pham Van Giao, the important role of the family – parents and relatives – alongside the children, the school, educational administrators, and psychological counseling is crucial in addressing each of the aforementioned issues, because people are at the center of all problems. Therefore, on the 3rd anniversary of the Institute's establishment, Mr. Pham Van Giao affirmed that in the coming years, the Institute will continue to promote its functions of social counseling, critique, and assessment; research and apply achievements in psychology and education and other related sciences; and bring together dedicated, talented, and enthusiastic teachers for the benefit of students and learners in general.

The Institute of Applied Psychology and Education (IAPE) was established on April 1, 2021, by a decision of the Vietnam Association of Psychology and Education, and was licensed to operate by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
