Dangerous ways to "cool down" quickly on hot days.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên27/02/2024

According to the Southern Vietnam Regional Hydrometeorological Station on February 27th, the heatwave continues to expand across Ho Chi Minh City. Forecasts indicate that over the next 10 days, up to March 8th, the heatwave will persist in Ho Chi Minh City with daily maximum temperatures ranging from 34 to 36 degrees Celsius.

According to a warning from the Southern Vietnam Regional Meteorological and Hydrological Station, hot weather combined with high UV index levels will affect people's health when participating in outdoor activities for extended periods. In addition, low humidity and dry weather increase the risk of fires and explosions.

Many people still have to work and commute for hours under the hot sun. Upon returning home, some resort to quick cooling methods such as turning on the air conditioner at a low temperature, splashing water on their faces, or directing a fan straight at their faces. However, according to experts, these cooling methods can be dangerously harmful to health.

Close the doors and windows, and turn the air conditioner to a low temperature to cool down quickly.

According to Dr. Nguyen Viet Hau, Head of the Emergency Department at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, the habit of immediately entering a room, closing the door, and turning on the air conditioner at the lowest setting to quickly cool down after being in the sun poses many health risks.

"Because when the body releases heat, blood vessels dilate, and when going from a hot place to a cold place, the temperature drops suddenly, causing the blood vessels to constrict, which can easily lead to headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, and heat shock," Dr. Hau explained.

Furthermore, according to Dr. Hau, frequently keeping doors tightly closed while using air conditioners also causes some harm. The air inside a closed room can become 2-5 times more toxic than the air outside if you keep the doors tightly closed. Every 15-30 minutes, you should open the room door to allow the room to "breathe" and replace the air with fresh air.

Sudden temperature changes can easily cause heat shock.

Splash cold water on your face immediately after sun exposure.

According to Dr. Ta Quoc Hung, a specialist in Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, when someone works outdoors in the hot sun for many hours or comes home from being out in the sun and suddenly pours cold water on their face, it can affect the autonomic nervous system, causing heat shock and a drop in blood pressure.

Take a shower immediately after coming in from the sun.

According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Thuan, a specialist at Nam Saigon International General Hospital, in the current intensely hot weather conditions, many people have a habit of going into the bathroom after being out in the sun to wash off sweat and cool their bodies.

"Taking a shower immediately after being in the sun will cause a sudden drop in body temperature, constricting pores and microvessels under the skin, thereby hindering blood circulation and leading to a cold. It can even affect heart rate and blood pressure, potentially causing a stroke," Dr. Thuan shared.

Doctor Thuan recommends resting for 15-20 minutes after being in the sun to allow body temperature to stabilize, then wiping the body down to allow it to adapt to the water temperature before starting a full body shower.

Taking a shower immediately after coming in from the sun will cause your body temperature to drop suddenly.

Place the front of the fan or misting fan in front of it.

According to Dr. Thuan, many people, after being in the sun, tend to put their faces in front of fans or misting machines to cool down quickly. However, this is not a good habit, because at this time the body sweats a lot, causing the blood vessels under the skin to dilate to release heat. If strong gusts of wind blow directly on the body, the sweat will evaporate even more, thereby lowering the skin temperature and causing the blood vessels to constrict suddenly while the internal body temperature has not yet stabilized. "This is the cause of temperature imbalance between the internal and external environments. As a result, after standing up, you are very likely to experience dizziness, lightheadedness, or even stroke on the spot," Dr. Thuan noted.
