Certain dietary supplements are incompatible.

VTC NewsVTC News30/11/2024

There are certain combinations of supplements that can cause adverse interactions, reducing absorption effectiveness or even harming health.

Vitamins A, D, E, and K

Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble vitamins, meaning they are stored in the liver and fatty tissues of the body. Consuming too many fat-soluble vitamins can lead to excessive accumulation in the body, causing side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, and even liver damage.

Combining vitamin A with high doses of vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, leading to kidney and cardiovascular problems. Combining vitamin D with high doses of vitamin E can reduce the effectiveness of vitamin K, causing blood clotting disorders. Combining vitamin E with high doses of vitamin K can reduce the antioxidant effects of vitamin E. Combining vitamin K with high doses of vitamin A can increase the risk of bleeding.

These vitamins should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Consult your doctor or nutritionist before combining these vitamins, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an underlying medical condition.

Fish oil and ginkgo extract

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial for cardiovascular health, brain function, and vision. Ginkgo biloba extract contains active compounds that help improve cerebral blood circulation and memory. However, both of these substances thin the blood. Taking fish oil and ginkgo biloba extract at the same time may increase the risk of bleeding, especially in people taking anticoagulants or with a history of blood clotting disorders.

Fish oil and ginkgo biloba extract should be taken at least 2 hours apart. Consult your doctor before combining fish oil and ginkgo biloba extract, especially if you are taking anticoagulants or have a history of blood clotting disorders.

Copper and zinc

Copper and zinc are two essential minerals for the body; however, they compete for absorption. Taking copper and zinc at the same time can reduce the absorption of both minerals. Therefore, copper and zinc should be taken at least two hours apart. Obtain copper and zinc from a varied diet, rather than relying solely on supplements.

Vitamin C and B12

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps boost the immune system. Vitamin B12 is essential for blood cell formation and nerve function. Vitamin C can destroy vitamin B12 in the digestive tract, reducing its absorption. Therefore, vitamin C and B12 should be taken at least two hours apart.

Calcium and iron

Calcium is essential for strong bones, and iron is essential for blood formation. Calcium can inhibit iron absorption, so calcium and iron should be taken at least two hours apart. Taking iron with vitamin C can enhance absorption. Ensure you get both calcium and iron from a varied diet.

Magnesium and calcium/zinc

Magnesium helps regulate muscle and nerve function, calcium is needed for strong bones, and zinc supports the immune system. Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of calcium and zinc. Therefore, magnesium should be taken at least 2 hours apart from calcium and zinc.
