| The exhibition space "Memories Illuminated in Color" by Hoang Dang Khanh and Tran Anh Huy |
In the early days of the Lunar New Year of the Horse, the beautiful French-style building at 23-25 Le Loi Street, next to the romantic Perfume River, captivated anyone who visited the "Memories in Color" art exhibition, which was on display throughout the Tet holiday, featuring works by two contemporary artists from Hue : Hoang Dang Khanh and Tran Anh Huy.
Interestingly, both are children of well-known artists in Hue's art scene. Khanh is the son of the late artist Hoang Dang Nhuan, and Huy is the son of the late artist Tran Mau Loc. Perhaps that is why the reunion of these two artists is a continuation of their shared passion for art.
Dozens of paintings by Khanh and Huy are displayed in an antique and romantic setting. There, viewers encounter a fascinating dialogue between two contrasting colors and styles: one side vibrant with sunlight and overflowing with energy, and the other calm and profound, reminiscent of a gentle winter's chill. Using their distinct techniques, Huy and Khanh have transformed these personal memories into a visual performance, where each brushstroke carries weight.
Hoang Dang Khanh leads viewers into a realm of quiet memories, where time slows down and space retreats into profound stillness. Khanh's paintings are the sublimation of an introspective lifestyle, where each color is filtered through a layer of contemplative mist. Khanh guides people back in time to old spaces, hazy cities, and historical neighborhoods; even a simple window is enough to reveal a contemplation of bygone times… Like Khanh's personality, each painting shows introspection, but it is an introspective introspection, where the colors invite the viewer to draw closer, to touch the layers of emotion within.
Khanh says that he often creates art revolving around memories of his experiences, whether in the place where he was born or in the regions he had the opportunity to visit during his dreamy, wild youth... And then, from there, he wants to use the language of painting to interpret space, fleeting memories, or experiences and discoveries .
“Those are also the things I’m looking for in life. I don’t follow any particular school of thought; everything I paint happens naturally, like a heartfelt confession. I also don’t pursue any specific kind of beauty, because for me, beauty is a perfection that is always sought but never attained,” Khanh confided.
Meanwhile, Tran Anh Huy's works, while somewhat contrasting in color palette when compared to those of Hoang Dang Khanh, share a certain harmony in their perspective and sense of memory. Huy's memories focus on the glorious beauty of reality with vibrant colors. Therefore, the bustling streets, crowded crowds, and old buildings in Huy's paintings always exude a cheerful spirit, brimming with hope.
Huy shared that the changing light, the radiance of nature, and the daily life on the streets are sources of inspiration for his works. "Conveying my feelings and emotions through my artworks and sharing them with like-minded viewers is what I aim for," Huy said.
Thus, the encounter, or perhaps the collaboration, between Tran Anh Huy and Hoang Dang Khanh in "Memories Illuminated in Color" is like a symphony with both brilliant high notes and deep, resonant low notes. Although they both paint familiar spaces, the way they illuminate them creates two distinct dimensions of memory.
In the early days of spring, standing before the paintings of these two artists, art lovers will more or less find some emotion, and recognize their own memories.
