The seasons of flowers tell stories.

In recent years, keywords like "Mu Cang Chai's apricot blossoms," "Da Lat's cherry blossoms," or "Northwest Vietnam's white plum blossom season" have not only become search trends but also a call to action for tourists, forming a trend of seasonal flower tourism. Within this broader context, Thai Nguyen – a midland region traditionally associated with tea cultivation – is gradually revealing its potential to become a unique flower-season destination if properly exploited.

Brilliant seasons of flowers

In recent years, seasonal flower tourism has become increasingly popular, giving a strong boost to many localities. No longer just short trips, tourists today are willing to plan their journeys according to the flowering seasons, turning flower seasons into experiential destinations.

From the middle of the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, Moc Chau entered its plum blossom season. The valleys covered in white plum blossoms quickly attracted millions of tourists from all over to take photos, check in, and enjoy the spring atmosphere of the highlands. The locality welcomed over 1.3 million visitors, generating over 1.2 trillion VND in revenue during the plum blossom season alone, demonstrating the strong appeal of this type of tourism.

Right after the plum blossom season, the Northwestern provinces continue to "keep the heat" with the bauhinia flower season. On March 14th and 15th, the Bauhinia Flower Festival was held in Dien Bien with many unique cultural and tourism activities. This is an opportunity to promote the cultural identity of the local ethnic groups to tourists. Not only the northern mountainous region, but many provinces and cities across the country also take advantage of the flower season to attract visitors.

Da Lat has long been famous for its seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms, jacaranda, hydrangeas, etc., attracting a large number of tourists every year. The provinces in the Mekong Delta are also developing garden tourism models, opening their flower gardens and fruit orchards to visitors, creating a stable source of income for the local people.

It is clear that flower-season tourism not only brings scenic value but also contributes to boosting the local economy , creating jobs, and improving people's lives. This is also a trend towards sustainable tourism development, connecting nature, culture, and people.

Thai Nguyen's unique story

Unlike well-known destinations like Mu Cang Chai or Da Lat, where flowers have become a distinct tourism brand, Thai Nguyen possesses a more tranquil atmosphere. However, this very tranquility is an advantage in a context where tourists are increasingly seeking authentic experiences close to nature. Without needing vast, meticulously planned flower fields, Thai Nguyen boasts flower seasons intertwined with local agricultural life and culture – something not found everywhere.

When mentioning Thai Nguyen, one immediately thinks of the tea plant, the iconic symbol that has made this region famous. But few people know that the tea plant also has its own flowering season. From late autumn to early winter, when the weather begins to turn chilly, the lush green tea hills are no longer just a monotonous green but are dotted with countless small white flowers. This is the unique "native flowering season" that Thai Nguyen can exploit as a distinctive tourism product.

Experiencing the tea blossom season is more than just admiring the flowers. Visitors can participate in tea picking with the locals, learn about the processing methods, and enjoy hot cups of tea amidst the airy mountain scenery. When the flowers and tea blend together, the experience becomes multi-layered: encompassing sight, smell, and taste. This is something that many famous flower-filled tourist destinations may not be able to achieve.

For Thai Nguyen, combining the tea flowering season with experiential activities can help increase the value of the tea industry, transforming it from an agricultural product into a tourism product with its own story and emotions.

Besides tea blossoms, Thai Nguyen also boasts pristine wildflower seasons. In spring, areas like Dinh Hoa, Vo Nhai, Ngan Son, and Ba Be communes come alive with apricot blossoms, plum blossoms, and many other flowers. The hillsides, small roads, and stream banks are suddenly covered in a layer of natural, unarranged color. It is this "imperfection" that creates its unique charm.

In a conversation with us about tourism development, Ms. Ha Thi Bich Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, shared that Thai Nguyen is gradually developing distinctive tourism products linked to its local strengths. Developing flower-season tourism, especially tea flower tourism, will contribute to creating a unique highlight. The important thing is to build a clear strategy and develop experiential products associated with flowers, instead of just focusing on sightseeing. Furthermore, investing in infrastructure, check-in points, and digital communication also plays a significant role in building the image of the province.

However, a crucial factor that those involved in tourism in Thai Nguyen need to consider is preserving the region's unique identity. As tourism develops, the risk of excessive commercialization is always present. If tea plantations are transformed into artificial photo spots, or flowers are planted haphazardly without a connection to local culture, their long-term appeal will diminish. Lessons from many tourist destinations show that today's visitors seek not only beauty but also authenticity.

Therefore, when discussing the advantages of Thai Nguyen, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa Mai, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, stated that: The development of seasonal flower tourism in Thai Nguyen needs to be placed within a long-term strategy, ensuring harmony between exploitation and conservation. It should not chase quantity or short-term trends, but rather focus on building products with unique characteristics that provide authentic experiences for tourists.

Flower tourism is not just a short-term trend, but a strategic direction if properly exploited. For Thai Nguyen, the advantage lies not in its splendor or scale, but in its cultural depth and connection to the lives of the local people. The tea flower season, the flower-covered slopes, or the festival spaces – all can become "pieces" that create a unique tourism story.
