Explosion at a pharmaceutical factory in India kills 15 people.

"As of now, the death toll stands at 15 and is likely to rise. Nearly 40 others have been injured. Rescue operations are underway," said police colonel M. Deepika.

The fire broke out in the afternoon at the manufacturing plant of Escientia Advanced Sciences, a company that has been operating since 2019 in the Anakapalli district of the state, according to the district chief, Vijaya Krishnan.

"The injured victims have been transported to nearby hospitals... there appears to have been an explosion at the chemical reactor," Krishnan's office added, noting that the explosion occurred at lunchtime at the plant.

Last year, two people were killed and five others injured in a similar fire at a solvent reactor at Sahithi Pharma's plant, also in Anakapalli district.
