According to local fire authorities, the explosion was reported at around 11 a.m. at a Hanwha Aerospace facility in Daejeon, a city located about 150 kilometers south of Seoul.

A representative from the Daejeon Fire Department stated that five people died, while two others were injured. Two survivors, one of whom suffered severe burns, managed to escape the scene before rescue forces arrived.

Health officials said identifying the victims was difficult due to the severe damage to the bodies after the explosion.

Authorities have confirmed that the explosion caused a fire at the factory, but the exact cause is still under investigation.

An official involved in handling the scene said rescue efforts were hampered because authorities could not access detailed blueprints of the plant, as the facility was under national security protection regulations.

Hanwha Aerospace is one of South Korea's largest defense manufacturers, specializing in the production of weapons, artillery systems, and aerospace components.

The Daejeon facility focuses on research and development, including advanced weapons technology, space-related systems, and the production of large-scale propulsion systems and rocket fuel processing.

A representative from Hanwha Aerospace stated that the extent of the damage and the specific details of the incident have not yet been fully determined. The fire at the scene had also not been completely extinguished at the time the company issued the announcement.

The explosion appears to have occurred while water was being used to clean explosive material from equipment used to manufacture rocket propellant, a Hanwha official said at a company press conference.

" We bow our heads in apology to the victims and their families," CEO Son Jae-il said, pledging to cooperate fully with authorities to determine the cause of the accident.

The five fatalities included two seasonal workers in their 20s, and all were employees of Hanwha, the company said.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung directed the mobilization of all necessary resources to respond to the incident and ordered an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Hanwha Aerospace said it is cooperating with authorities to investigate the incident.
