Over the years, the Western Lao Cai Province Ethnic Boarding High School has continuously innovated and improved the quality of education, becoming a place to nurture and help students from ethnic minority communities realize their dreams.

Originally established in 1963 as the Yen Bai Teacher Training College, the school was transformed into the Western Region Ethnic Minority Boarding High School in 2009, with the mission of managing, educating , and nurturing students from ethnic minority communities in the western districts and towns of the former Yen Bai province.

Throughout its construction, innovation, and development, with the determination to overcome difficulties and the diligent efforts of its administrators, teachers, and students, the Western Region Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities has continuously grown stronger, achieving many encouraging accomplishments, worthy of the trust and affection of parents and students.

Currently, 100% of the school's administrators and teachers have qualifications meeting or exceeding the required standards, with 25% exceeding them. The teaching staff are always actively studying and improving their political , professional, and technical skills, contributing to the overall improvement of educational quality.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Quynh, from Nga Ba Kim village, Pung Luong commune, and head of the Parent-Teacher Association whose child is in 11th grade at the school, said: "Although the school is far from home and transportation is difficult, my family is very reassured that our child is studying and living at the Western Region Ethnic Boarding High School. The school has a good learning environment, dedicated teachers, and complete facilities, which are favorable for the comprehensive development of ethnic minority students."

In the 2024-2025 academic year, the percentage of students achieving good and excellent academic performance reached 90.91%; the high school graduation rate reached 100%, ranking 4th in the province. Emphasis was placed on advanced education, with 19 provincial-level student excellence awards, 2 provincial-level science and technology awards, and 5 students receiving Vallet scholarships from the Meeting Vietnam Organization. The school was recognized as meeting National Standards Level 1.

Hoang Thi Nguyet, a student in class 12A1, shared: "I am very happy and proud to be studying at this school. My classmates and I are well cared for by our teachers, from meals and sleep to the teaching of knowledge and life skills... This is my final year of high school, so I will try my best to study well so as not to disappoint my teachers and family, and to contribute to building a prosperous and strong homeland."

In the 2025-2026 school year, the school will receive investment to build modern facilities to support teaching and learning.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the school will have 12 classes with 418 students. Teachers and students are delighted that the State has invested 30 billion VND in building modern facilities, including an administration building, classrooms, subject-specific classrooms, and a multi-purpose hall. Currently, the school has 12 smart classrooms, 6 subject-specific classrooms, and 5 functional rooms to meet teaching and learning requirements.

One of the key tasks that the Western Region Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities pays special attention to is organizing teaching and learning suitable for 100% of its ethnic minority students, of which nearly 70% are Hmong students with limited entry-level abilities. The school has mobilized resources and categorized students from grade 10 onwards to plan for nurturing gifted students, providing remedial instruction for weaker students, and conducting two-session daily classes; simultaneously, it has implemented review sessions for the graduation exams in basic subjects from the beginning of the school year.

Ms. Le Thi Thu Thao, homeroom teacher of class 12C1, said: "During the summer, the teaching staff received training and professional development to improve their expertise and innovate teaching methods according to the 2018 General Education Program. In the teaching process, I regularly research and apply digital transformation, prepare electronic lesson plans to create interest for students, and explore appropriate and effective teaching methods for each student."

In line with the school year's theme of "Discipline - Creativity - Breakthrough - Development," the Western Region Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities focuses on innovating management practices; strictly implementing teaching and learning plans; strengthening solutions to improve educational quality; effectively deploying campaigns and emulation movements to build a happy school; promoting extracurricular activities and preserving cultural identity; and simultaneously applying science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation in education.

Ms. Ha Bich Ngoc, Principal of the Western Region Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities, emphasized: With specific and clear goals, tasks, and solutions, right from the beginning of the school year, the school is determined to fulfill its mission of training high-quality human resources for ethnic minority communities, mountainous areas, and areas with special difficulties.

The school consistently strives to build a comprehensive learning and training environment – ​​a reputable institution for quality education, care, and nurturing of ethnic minority boarding students; meeting the requirements of educational reform and the human resource development needs of Lao Cai province. At the same time, it creates an environment where teachers can freely express their creativity, contribute, and nurture a bright future for ethnic minority students.
