Over the years, the Western Ethnic Boarding High School (PTDTNT - THPT) of Lao Cai province has constantly innovated, created, and improved the quality of education, becoming a place to nurture and foster the dreams of students from ethnic minority areas.

The predecessor was Yen Bai Pedagogical College established in 1963. In 2009, the school was transformed into the Western Ethnic Minority Boarding School - High School, with the task of managing, educating and nurturing students from ethnic minority areas in the western districts and towns of Yen Bai province (old).

During the process of construction, innovation and development, with the determination to overcome difficulties and the efforts of the management staff, teachers and students, the Western Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities - High School has continuously grown, achieved many encouraging achievements, worthy of the trust and love of parents and students.

Currently, 100% of the school's management staff and teachers have qualifications that meet or exceed the standard, of which 25% are above the standard. The team of teachers and lecturers always actively study and improve their political , professional and technical qualifications, contributing to improving the overall quality of education.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Quynh in Nga Ba Kim village, Pung Luong commune, Head of the Parents' Association whose child is studying in grade 11 at the school, said: Although the school is far from home and transportation is difficult, my family is very assured when my child is studying and living at the Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities - Mien Tay High School. The school has a good learning environment, dedicated teachers, adequate facilities, and is favorable for ethnic minority students to develop comprehensively.

In the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of students with good and excellent academic performance reached 90.91%; the high school graduation rate reached 100%, ranking 4th in the province. Attention was paid to key educational work, during the school year there were 19 provincial-level excellent student awards, 2 provincial-level science and technology awards, 5 students received Vallet scholarships from the Vietnam Rencontres du Vietnam. The school was recognized as meeting national standards level 1.

Hoang Thi Nguyet - a student of class 12A1 shared: I am very happy and proud to study at this school. My friends and I are taken care of by the teachers from meals, sleep to knowledge and life skills... This is my final year, so I will try my best to study well so as not to let down the efforts of my teachers and family, and contribute to building a strong homeland.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the school will invest in building spacious facilities to serve teaching and learning.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the school will have 12 classes with 418 students. Teachers and students are pleased to receive State investment in building spacious facilities including: administration building, classrooms, subject classrooms and multi-purpose hall with a total cost of 30 billion VND. The school currently has 12 smart classrooms, 6 subject classrooms and 5 functional rooms to meet teaching and learning requirements.

One of the important tasks that the Western Ethnic Minority Boarding School - High School pays special attention to is organizing teaching and learning suitable for 100% of ethnic minority students, of which nearly 70% are Mong students, with limited input quality. The school has mobilized resources, classified students from grade 10 to have a plan to nurture good students, tutor weak students, teach 2 sessions/day; at the same time, implement graduation exam review for basic subjects right from the beginning of the school year.

Teacher Le Thi Thu Thao - homeroom teacher of class 12C1 said: During the summer, the staff and teachers were trained and fostered to improve their professional qualifications and innovate teaching methods according to the 2018 General Education Program. During the teaching process, I regularly research and apply digital transformation, prepare electronic lesson plans to create interest for students, and at the same time, seek out appropriate and effective teaching methods for each group of students.
