Natural language networks will eliminate the complexity of network management while allowing for better responsiveness to end-user needs. By utilizing AI technology, these networks will help service providers deploy and maintain the ideal network configuration for any customer as soon as it is requested.
Nokia has developed AI capable of reconfiguring networks through human voice commands.
Furthermore, Natural Language Networks continuously learn from their experiences and actions, further optimizing the network after each request. As their knowledge increases, Natural Language Networks can predict service and application needs and adapt to those needs without any human intervention.
Csaba Vulkan, head of the network automation research group at Nokia Bell Labs, said: "Operators will no longer need to study technical catalogs or complex API specifications when configuring networks. Instead, a simple statement like 'Optimize network at location X for service Y' will fulfill that requirement. Such requirements could be used to configure wireless networks in a factory for robot automation or optimize the network at a concert when audience members are posting on multiple social media platforms."
Natural language networks are part of a new research initiative by Nokia Bell Labs called UNEXT. Named after UNIX, the legendary operating system invented by Nokia Bell Labs, UNEXT will redefine software and networking in the same way that UNIX reshaped computing. UNEXT will make securely integrating any device into a network environment a simple task by transforming the network environment into an operating system.
