With flexibility and boldness, many farmers in Cam Thach commune (Cam Xuyen district, Ha Tinh province) have dared to transform and improve low-productivity land into economic models that generate considerable income.
Mr. Le Cong Tuan (wearing a white shirt, from Xuan Loc village, Cam Thach commune) is feeding freshwater prawns.
More than 10 years ago, on the unproductive semi-mountainous land in Xuan Loc village (Cam Thach commune), Mr. Le Cong Tuan (born in 1981) boldly leased over 7 hectares of land to plant acacia trees and raise ducks.
By early 2020, having accumulated some capital, he continued to learn more about the model of raising freshwater prawns, hoping to increase his family's income. Acting on this idea, Mr. Tuan invested nearly 100 million VND to rent machinery to dig ponds, build embankments, and stock four ponds with a total water surface area of over 6,000 square meters .
Raising freshwater prawns has helped Mr. Tuan's family increase their income and make the most of their available land.
The land rewards hard work. Through years of diligent care, Mr. Tuan's economic model now includes over 4 hectares of acacia forest, yielding approximately 100 million VND per harvesting cycle; 1,000 laying ducks, producing over 800 eggs daily, generating over 2 million VND in income. In addition, he sells over 1 ton of freshwater prawns annually.
From raising ducks, farming shrimp, and planting acacia trees, Mr. Tuan earns more than 350 million VND each year.
Mr. Tuan excitedly said: “On average, my model generates revenue of over 1 billion VND per year, and after deducting expenses, I earn a profit of over 350 million VND. Renting and converting unproductive land into farms was the right decision, giving me land to invest in expanding production, exploiting and maximizing the potential of barren land, avoiding waste, and bringing high economic efficiency.”
The black snail farming model of Mr. Le Van Loc (Boc Nguyen village, Cam Thach commune).
After more than a year of raising black snails, nearly 3,000 square meters of water surface belonging to Mr. Le Van Loc (born in 1994, Boc Nguyen village, Cam Thach commune) has initially yielded quite high economic returns.
Mr. Loc said: "In 2022, realizing that black snails are a highly nutritious food, popular among people but increasingly scarce in their natural environment, after consulting many models inside and outside the province, I decided to invest in raising this mollusk to improve my family's economic income."
Although he has only been raising them for over a year, Mr. Loc's black snail farming model has yielded quite high economic returns.
When starting to raise black snails, Mr. Loc rented nearly 3,000 square meters of abandoned water surface in the village and proceeded to build a breeding system that met technical standards. After completing the breeding ponds, Mr. Loc divided the area into 3 ponds and released 40,000 snail hatchlings imported from Hanoi for the first batch.
Mr. Loc shared: “After more than a year of raising snails, I have sold over 1 ton of commercial snails and over 350,000 snail hatchlings, earning nearly 130 million VND. Currently, I have just released another 40,000 snail hatchlings; the snails are adapting and developing well, and I expect to harvest them in August, with a yield of nearly 3 tons. This income has helped my family stabilize our lives and provides the conditions to expand the scale in the future.”
Mr. Tran Van Hieu's frog farming model in Na Trung village (Cam Thach commune).
Having just sold nearly 40,000 froglets, earning almost 40 million VND, Mr. Tran Van Hieu (born in 1960, residing in Na Trung village, Cam Thach commune) excitedly shared: “I started raising frogs in 2022. They are easy to care for, don't require much space, and can be raised in any available area. Currently, I'm raising them in 5 concrete cages. Each year, selling froglets and adult frogs brings in about 70 million VND in profit for my family. In the future, I plan to expand to 10 cages to ensure sufficient supply for the market.”
It is known that, in addition to raising frogs, Mr. Hieu's family also raises 10 goats and 6 ponds of freshwater eels; each year, raising goats, freshwater eels, and frogs brings Mr. Hieu's family more than 120 million VND, helping them stabilize their lives and become a well-off household in the locality.
Currently, Cam Thach commune has 15 economic models in various fields, of which 10 models generate income ranging from 120 to 350 million VND.
Mr. Truong Quang Thuan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Cam Thach commune, said: "Currently, the entire commune has 15 economic models in various fields, of which 10 models generate income from 120 to 350 million VND/year. These models, with initial support from the commune in terms of capital and production processes, are gradually developing and making a significant contribution to the commune's development, especially in the process of building new rural areas."
In the coming period, the locality will encourage people to consolidate land to form specialized production areas, producing crops and livestock with high productivity and economic value using high technology.
