On January 14th, Mr. Huynh Nam Phat, residing in Binh An commune, Chau Thanh district, Kien Giang province, reported that he had just harvested over 10,000 coconuts from 3 hectares of land, selling them to traders at a price of 90,000 VND per dozen. At a price of 7,500 VND per coconut, after deducting expenses, Mr. Phat earned a profit of over 15 million VND, making him very happy.
The family of Ms. Truong My Hang (a resident of the same locality) also has a garden with over 250 coconut trees. About 10 days ago, her family sold more than 1,200 coconuts to traders at a price of 90,000 VND per dozen.
"This year, the price of coconuts is about 40,000-50,000 VND higher per dozen compared to last year. Thanks to selling coconuts, my family will have a warmer Tet holiday this year," Ms. Hang said excitedly.
Currently, dried coconuts are being purchased by traders at prices ranging from 85,000 to 100,000 VND per dozen (12 coconuts). According to many coconut traders in Kien Giang province, the price of coconuts has increased compared to the same period last year due to increased demand from China.
"Not only is demand from the international market increasing, but domestic factories and businesses are also in great need of raw materials to produce confectionery and jams for Tet (Lunar New Year). Therefore, the domestic demand for coconuts is also growing strongly," said Tran Van Dung, a coconut trader in Ben Tre .
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Nghia, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province, Vietnamese coconut products are increasingly appreciated by the international market for their quality and reputation, opening up great opportunities for export.
The production and processing of fresh coconuts in Vietnam has developed strongly, increasing the value of coconuts while stabilizing product prices, creating a solid foundation for farmers and businesses.
