On September 23, Tuoi Tre Online reported that in Binh An commune, An Giang province, young areca nuts are currently being purchased by traders at a stable price of 25,000 VND/kg, while normal areca nuts are 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg. This is considered a high price compared to the same period in many years, helping many farming households have a significant additional source of income.

Ms. Thi Nhung, a resident of Binh An commune, said her family has nearly 10 hectares of land intercropping with areca, coconut and pineapple. On average, each hectare has 50-70 areca trees, each tree produces 20-30kg of fruit per year. At the current price, the areca trees alone have brought her family an income of more than 40-50 million VND/crop, about 20% higher than the same period last year.

"Areca nuts are usually only expensive at the beginning of the season, and then decrease in price in the middle and end of the season because everyone is harvesting. But this year, near the end of the season, young areca nuts are still priced at 25,000 VND/kg, so people are very happy because they have more income from areca nuts, and their family living expenses are also lighter," Ms. Nhung shared.

Similarly, Mr. Huynh Nam Phat, residing in Binh An commune, has more than 3 hectares of intercropped pineapple, coconut and areca. Although areca is not the main crop, with about 400 areca trees, this year Mr. Phat also earned nearly 20 million VND from selling young areca.

"If last year, selling areca nuts at the same time, the profit was only about 10-12 million VND, this year it has almost doubled. However, areca nuts are just a secondary crop, people still rely mainly on coconuts and pineapples," said Mr. Phat.

According to the people, the high price of young areca nuts is mainly due to the high import demand from China, especially the industry of processing areca candy from young areca nuts. Although the supply is scarce, the demand is still high, pushing up the price of young areca nuts.

Talking to Tuoi Tre , Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luan, Chairman of Binh An Commune People's Committee, said that Binh An currently has over 80 hectares of 3 intercropped trees: pineapple, areca, and coconut in the same area.

Areca nut prices have increased by more than 30% over the same period. Binh An has the largest areca nut growing area in An Giang province. Farmers grow 3 trees intercropped to have a continuous income throughout the year. For pineapples, there is a processing factory and soon there will be another processing factory, ensuring that over 90% of the output is guaranteed.

"Areca palm is just a tree that provides additional income. The price of young areca palms increases or decreases depending on the export market, China or Taiwan. This year, the price of young areca palms has increased, so farmers are excited," Mr. Luan added.
