In this match, Learner Tien faced British player Cameron Norrie, ranked 27th in the world . At 30 years old, Norrie is much more experienced (he was born in 1995, while Tien is 10 years younger).
Before the final, the Vietnamese-born tennis player had secured a place in the world top 30 thanks to his ticket to the final of the Moselle Open. This was the first time in his career that he had reached this milestone.
But despite having less battle experience, Learner Tien possesses a more complete skill set. His youth also helps him gain excitement and confidence.
He quickly won the first set 6-3. Norrie won the second set 6-3, forcing the final into a third set.
Here, the best drama was pushed to the top. Learner Tien had a 3-0 lead, but then a lapse in concentration made him lose 4-4 and then 6-6.
The deciding set had to go into a tie-break, and Norrie was very close to winning when leading 5-1. But Learner Tien played explosively, turning the situation around to win 8-6, thereby claiming the championship.
This is the first time the Vietnamese-born tennis player has won an ATP tournament. At the age of 19, he is the first American teenager to win an ATP title since Andy Roddick in 2002.
He is also the youngest winner of the Moselle Open since Djokovic won in 2006.
Sharing after the historic title, Learner Tien said: "I never took coming here to compete for granted. Therefore, this title is really meaningful and I feel happy."
