Lisandro Martinez is about to return. |
This decision surprised many people, because most Premier League clubs keep injured players at their medical centers.
Martinez has been absent since February. He only returned to Carrington training a few weeks ago, in the final stages of his rehabilitation programme.
However, Man United believe that the training environment with the Argentina team will help the player regain his rhythm and spirit faster. The Argentine Football Association confirmed that the midfielder only trained and did not play in the friendly match with Angola.
Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has said Martinez’s recovery will be “a slow process”. But now, with the 27-year-old centre-back training at high intensity with Lionel Messi and his teammates, the pace of his return could be accelerated.
United know they are at a crucial stage of the season. The defence is shaky, and Martinez’s fighting spirit is what the team needs. Letting him train with the national team is a risky move, but it also shows Amorim’s belief in the Argentine’s will and professionalism.
If all goes well, Martinez could be back after the international break. A few minutes against Everton or Crystal Palace would be enough to get his footing back. And for Man United, having the “warrior” back in the heart of defence would be as valuable as a new contract.
