According to Digital Chat Station on the Chinese social network Weibo, Apple's development of under-screen camera technology is progressing as planned and could be applied by 2027.
There are some Android phones on the market that have selfie cameras hidden under the screen, but image quality is often affected because the lens is behind the screen layers, so Apple will not use this technology.
There have been reports that Apple is developing its own solution, which will appear on the foldable iPhone next year. There are also predictions about the possibility of the iPhone 18 Pro being equipped with FaceID under the screen.
The buzz around technologies that would make the iPhone screen seamless, unbroken by selfie cameras and facial recognition sensors, may reflect the fact that Apple is actively working on this long-standing problem.
LG Innotek, one of Apple's key suppliers, has reportedly developed an under-display camera that leaves no holes when not in use.
The system uses a multi-coated “freeform optics” lens array designed to reduce distortion and improve brightness, compensating for the light loss that often occurs when the camera is behind the display.
Until now, under-display cameras have typically been of significantly lower quality than conventional cameras housed in notches on the top of the device or in small punch-holes.
It is unclear whether the technology related to LG Innotek's project will be used in the foldable iPhone. Recently, JP Morgan reported that Apple's first foldable phone will have a 24 MP under-screen camera, 3-4 times higher than the usual level of competitors.
This news suggests that Apple may have made a breakthrough in improving light transmission and image quality compared to previous designs.
Multiple sources have suggested that Apple is working on a completely new design for the 20th anniversary iPhone, possibly featuring a completely bezel-less display that curves on all four sides. Many expect Apple to skip the “iPhone 19” name.
Previously, on the occasion of the iPhone's 10th anniversary in 2017, Apple skipped the "iPhone 9" and simply called it the iPhone X (the Roman numeral for 10) alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
