Coach Mancini returns to Asia to work. |
Mancini's contract is for two and a half seasons, with a salary of around 5 million euros per season after tax. The Qatari club has the option to extend the contract after it expires.
Mancini returns to coaching after a spell in charge of Saudi Arabia until October 2024, as well as a successful spell with Italy (2018-2023). Before that, his last club management was at Zenit Saint Petersburg, more than seven years ago.
In Qatar, Mancini will face a completely different environment, but with ambitions. Al-Sadd are aiming to return to the top of the continent by winning the AFC Champions League, a title they last won in 2011 under coach Jorge Fossati.
Mancini is joined by former Empoli and Siena striker Massimo Maccarone and former Inter and Lazio player Cesar, an all-Italian trio who will bring European experience and expertise to the booming Middle East league.
Before accepting Al-Sadd's offer, Mancini considered several European options, including Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, as well as the possibility of returning to Serie A. In the end, the lucrative salary and the opportunity to build a team in Qatar convinced him to agree.
Al Sadd are not playing well at the moment, only having 2 points after 4 matches and not yet qualified for the next round in the Western region. The management hopes that Mancini's arrival will help the team regain their spirit and winning identity.
