Huong Do promotes the effectiveness of small livelihoods to sustainably reduce poverty

In Huong Do commune, poor and near-poor households are mostly disabled, single or in poor health... Harsh natural conditions and unstable income from fields and gardens mean that many households have almost no capital to invest in production. Therefore, small-scale livelihood models of the State have become an important support for people to have the opportunity to overcome their fate.

The sow is the "capital" and also the starting point for Tran Thi Thuy's journey out of poverty.

For the family of Ms. Tran Thi Thuy (Thai Yen village), the cow is the "capital" of the mother and her three children and also the starting point for the journey out of poverty. Ms. Thuy was born in 1993, is disabled, and raises two children alone with a small amount of subsidy. Before, life was a series of difficult days, struggling to make ends meet, while she herself often had to go to the hospital due to poor health.

Ms. Thuy is selling some small items such as chicken eggs, duck eggs, fruits, etc. to have more income.

Ms. Thuy recounted: “There was a time when I thought I could not get up. But in the difficult times, we always received timely encouragement and support from all levels, sectors, and philanthropists. In addition to the small, solid house, I also received support to develop production with a model of raising breeding cows. When I received the cow, I was both happy and worried, afraid that I could not raise it, but my relatives and the local government affirmed that they would always accompany me, so I was given more motivation. Luckily, after only a few months, the cow gave birth to its first litter.

I sold the calf, earning nearly 5 million VND and used it as capital to do some small business such as chicken eggs, duck eggs, fruits, etc. to have more income. The cow is also preparing to give birth to the second litter. If everything goes well, I will continue to invest to expand production and business, and escape poverty."

From nothing, Ms. Thuy now has a more stable source of income. Although life is still difficult, she no longer has to worry about making ends meet like before. “I am grateful because this program not only helped me have a cow, but also showed me that I can still do it, can still stand firm. Now I just hope my health will be more stable so that I can continue to rise up and raise my children to be good people,” Ms. Thuy added.

After receiving support, Mr. Phuong has more motivation to develop production.

In village 3, the story of overcoming difficulties of Mr. Tran Binh Phuong (born in 1979) also made many people admire. His wife suffered a stroke many years ago, and he alone took care of all the housework and raised two children. As a near-poor household, in 2024, Mr. Phuong was considered for support with a sow.

After receiving support, he has more motivation to develop production. Mr. Phuong shared: “Not only raising cows, now I borrow more fields and gardens to plow, and in my free time I work for hire. Up to now, the sow has given birth to its first litter, I plan to expand the herd. There are still many difficulties, but with the support program and the encouragement of staff, I feel I have to try harder to not let down that help.”

The rate of poor and near-poor households in Huong Do commune is decreasing every year. People's lives are increasingly improving.

The simple stories of Ms. Thuy and Mr. Phuong are vivid proof of the effectiveness of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction for the period 2021 - 2025. In Huong Do, each dong of support capital not only helps people have more livelihoods, but also opens up opportunities for them to affirm their value through labor, determination and aspiration to change their lives. According to statistics, the projects of the Poverty Reduction Program have been effectively implemented in Huong Do, contributing significantly to reducing the rate of poor and near-poor households in the commune over the years. Many households have not only escaped poverty but also developed their economy well, proactively sharing experiences and supporting other households.

Huong Do commune continues to mobilize resources for the poor.

Mr. Le Huu Dong - Chairman of Huong Do Commune People's Committee said: The Resolution of the Commune Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term has determined that "The average reduction in the rate of multidimensional poverty households in the period of 2026 - 2030 will reach 0.5%". To achieve the set goals and targets, the Party Committee, the government and organizations in the political system have focused on leadership and direction, focusing on effectively implementing the National Target Programs on poverty reduction; helping poor, near-poor and disadvantaged households access and implement livelihood models; depending on the conditions of each household and individual (land, human resources, etc.), support seedlings, livestock, and technical guidance for households to develop the economy, contributing to improving the lives and living conditions of households.

What we have noticed most clearly is the change in people's thinking. From relying on and waiting for support, they are now more proactive, knowing how to take advantage of the resources given to them to rise up. For vulnerable households such as people with disabilities, the support is not only material but also a great spiritual motivation. The locality is continuing to review poor and near-poor households and support people to build suitable livelihood models."
