According to Financial Times sources, Apple's board of directors and management are accelerating plans to find successors for top leadership positions, including CEO Tim Cook.
Tim Cook became Apple's CEO in 2011 after Steve Jobs stepped down. Rumors suggest that John Ternus, Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is a strong candidate to take over as CEO. However, Apple has not yet made a final decision.
While not specifying the reason for Apple's accelerated succession planning, the Financial Times emphasized that the decision was unrelated to the company's business performance.
"Sources close to the matter say the succession process, which has been planned for a long time, is unrelated to current business results. It's worth remembering that iPhone sales are poised to reach record levels later this year," the news site reported.
Apple is unlikely to announce a succession decision until it releases its next quarterly financial report in January 2026, which includes year-end holiday sales figures.
The source emphasized that even though the plan has been accelerated, the timing of Apple's announcement of its next CEO could still change.
Rumors about Cook's successor emerged just hours after former Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jeff Williams ended his tenure at Apple on November 15th.
“Jeff and I have worked together for a long time. Apple wouldn’t be where it is today without him.”
“He helped create one of the most highly regarded global supply chains, created the Apple Watch and oversaw product development, built health strategies and led our world- class design team with the utmost intelligence, passion and dedication,” Tim Cook said in Williams’ retirement announcement in July.

Jeff Williams joined Apple in 1998 as Director of Global Purchasing. At Apple, one of Williams' achievements was the ability to build a supply chain capable of handling hundreds of millions of devices annually, sourcing components from thousands of suppliers worldwide.
For over 10 years, Williams became a close senior associate of Cook, overseeing supply chain operations, Apple Watch development, and the AppleCare customer service division.
At 62 years old, Williams was once considered Cook's successor due to the title and similarities. However, the short age difference (2 years) and Williams' desire to retire caused Apple to change its plans.
Currently, Sabih Khan holds the position of Apple's COO. Some of Williams' previous responsibilities have been reassigned to other senior executives, including John Ternus.
Recently, Apple's leadership also experienced changes when Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Luca Maestri resigned. Currently, the CFO position is held by Kevan Parekh, who previously served as Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis.
