According to sources of the Financial Times , the board of directors and management at Apple are accelerating plans to find successors for senior leadership positions, including CEO Tim Cook.
Tim Cook became CEO of Apple in 2011 after Steve Jobs resigned. Rumors say that Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus is likely to take over as CEO. However, a final decision has not been made by Apple.
Although it did not specify the reason for Apple's accelerated succession plan, the Financial Times emphasized that this decision was not related to the company's business situation.
“The long-planned succession is not tied to current business results, with iPhone sales set to hit a record later this year,” the source said.
Apple likely won't announce a succession decision until it releases its next quarterly financial report in January 2026, which includes holiday season sales.
The source stressed that although the plan was accelerated, the timing of Apple's announcement of the next CEO could still change.
Rumors about Cook's successor emerged just hours after former Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jeff Williams left Apple on November 15.
“Jeff and I have worked together for a long time. Apple would not be where it is today without him.
“He has helped build one of the most respected global supply chains, created Apple Watch and oversaw product development, built our health strategy, and led our world- class design team with the greatest intelligence, passion, and dedication,” Tim Cook said in announcing Williams’ retirement in July.

Jeff Williams joined Apple in 1998 as Director of Worldwide Purchasing. One of Williams' accomplishments at Apple was his ability to build a supply chain that could handle hundreds of millions of devices a year, sourcing components from thousands of suppliers around the world.
For more than 10 years, Williams became a close senior associate of Cook, overseeing supply chain operations, Apple Watch development and AppleCare customer care.
Williams, 62, was once considered Cook's successor because of his title and similarities. However, the short age gap (2 years) and Williams' desire to retire caused Apple to change its plans.
Sabih Khan is currently the COO of Apple. Some of Williams' previous duties have been redistributed to other senior executives, including John Ternus.
Apple's leadership has also recently undergone turmoil, with the departure of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Luca Maestri. The CFO position is now held by Kevan Parekh, who previously held the role of Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis.
