Hanoi promotes green production and consumption towards sustainable development.

Amidst the wave of globalization and the trend of green growth, Hanoi stands out as a bright spot in promoting sustainable production and consumption. Beyond mere policy, the capital city is transforming "green economy" into concrete actions, spreading its influence to every business and citizen.

In recent years, the concept of "greening" has become familiar to the people of Hanoi. From factories and craft villages to supermarkets and traditional markets, environmentally friendly production and consumption are gradually becoming the natural choice. As the largest economic and cultural center in the country, Hanoi is gradually realizing a sustainable development model where economic growth goes hand in hand with preserving the living environment.

In the manufacturing sector, many businesses have proactively transformed their operating models. Facilities are adopting cleaner production processes, using recycled materials, saving energy, and reducing emissions. Environmentally friendly products are increasingly appearing in the packaging, textile, handicraft, food, and household goods industries. Many businesses have achieved green product certifications, participated in the "Cleaner Production in Industry" program, and embraced the "Zero Plastic Waste" commitment.

Hanoi is promoting green and sustainable consumption activities.

Traditional craft villages, once the pride of Hanoi, are also undergoing transformation. In Bat Trang, Phu Vinh, Tranh Khuc, and Duong Lam, many establishments have invested in waste treatment systems, utilized natural materials, and minimized pollution. Preserving traditional crafts is linked to the goal of sustainable development, creating livelihoods for the people while preserving cultural heritage.

According to statistics, over 50% of distribution businesses have adopted cleaner, energy-saving production solutions; 65% of non-biodegradable packaging in markets, shopping malls, and supermarkets has been replaced; 70% of businesses in industrial zones have switched to clean technology; and nearly 80% of agricultural and food businesses participate in safe production chains. These figures not only reflect achievements but also demonstrate a profound shift in the awareness of businesses and the public.

The change has also spread to consumer lifestyles. Hanoi residents are increasingly proactively choosing green options, such as bringing reusable cloth bags and personal water bottles to the supermarket, and saying no to single-use plastic bags. At major retail chains like GO!, WinMart, BRG Mart, and Aeon, the display areas for organic and energy-saving products always attract buyers. Recent surveys show that the majority of young consumers are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products, a clear indication that green consumption is becoming a lifestyle in the city.

However, Hanoi's path to green development still faces challenges. Many small and medium-sized enterprises are limited in capital and technology; green products remain expensive; and awareness of sustainable consumption is uneven. According to experts, to overcome these challenges, the city needs to improve green financing and credit mechanisms, promote community awareness, and build a transparent system of identification and eco-labels to make them easily recognizable and trustworthy to consumers.

According to Nguyen The Hiep, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, implementing the National Program on Sustainable Production and Consumption for the period 2021-2030, the Hanoi Center for Industrial Promotion and Development Consulting has implemented many programs connecting green supply chains and supporting businesses in the handicraft, textile, agricultural, and food industries. “We aim to make green production and consumption a daily practice, not just a movement,” Mr. Hiep emphasized.

During the period 2021-2025, Hanoi will incorporate green development into its key action program, focusing on perfecting policy mechanisms, implementing pilot models for cleaner production and waste management, promoting the use of advanced energy in industry, and supporting businesses both technically and financially.

Greening production and consumption is not only a direction for economic development but also a commitment of Hanoi in protecting the environment, responding to climate change, and building a sustainable future. When green products become a habit for the people, the capital city will truly strive to become a green, smart, and livable city, becoming a model for the whole country in harmonious development between people and nature.
