According to Tuoi Tre Online , at Tra Su culvert area, Thoi Son ward, An Giang province, flood water continues to pour into two culvert compartments like a waterfall, while the two culvert compartments on the edge are tightly closed. Tha La culvert has been closed by the culvert operator since October 18th until now.
"The unit has closed the Tha La sluice to control flooding downstream. As for the Tra Su sluice, only the two side gates are closed, leaving the two middle gates to let flood water drain downstream.
The main reason for closing the sluice gate is that the downstream area of the autumn-winter rice crop is at risk of being flooded. The unit is asking for the opinion of the Provincial People's Committee on how to handle the situation if the floodwater level continues to increase," said a leader of the An Giang Province Irrigation Company.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Day - Chairman of Thanh My Tay Commune People's Committee - said that the locality has a document proposing to close Tha La and Tra Su sluice gates to protect production from floodwaters rising about 0.8m higher than the same period last year.
Accordingly, this autumn-winter crop, Thanh My Tay commune planted over 9,460 hectares of rice in 14 sub-regions. Up to now, there are 7 sub-regions, with about 6,220 hectares of low dikes, the embankment elevation is still higher than the water level outside the canal by about 10 - 50cm at many points along the route.

However, flood water in this area is still rising, and according to the forecast of An Giang Province Hydrometeorological Station, water levels will continue to rise in the coming days due to the influence of storms and rain in the fields.
"In about a month, the first autumn-winter rice crop can be harvested. Therefore, during this period, we have asked the force to focus on checking the weak dykes to promptly reinforce them, ensuring that people can safely produce autumn-winter rice. Many dykes are degraded and the water level this year is higher than 0.8m, so people are worried," Mr. Day said.
Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province is submitting to the People's Committee of An Giang province for approval of the policy of gradually organizing the closure of Tha La and Tra Su sluices according to the plan: continue to operate and close all main gates of Tha La and Tra Su sluices, and side gates to ensure the flood drainage function of the project. Stop water transport through Tha La and Tra Su sluices.

Thereby, it ensures the task of flood drainage, reduces the flow through the culvert into the inland area, at the same time, the water circulation through the project with narrow aperture and high speed will not ensure the safety of water traffic.
Tha La and Tra Su sluices were started to be built at the location of Tha La and Tra Su rubber spillway, on the flood prevention dike on the southern bank of Vinh Te canal, in Thoi Son ward, An Giang province. Construction was completed in 2022 and handed over to An Giang Irrigation Exploitation Company Limited for management, operation, exploitation and protection until now.
The tasks of these two sluices are to regulate floods from Cambodia to the West Sea; create conditions to bring alluvium from the Hau River to improve fields; get water to irrigate about 17,500 hectares of natural land in the dry season; develop waterway and road traffic; control floods in the Long Xuyen quadrangle with a natural area of 498,141 hectares in An Giang province and Can Tho city.
