From this morning, December 6, Ho Chi Minh City officially banned trucks with a carrying capacity of over 1.5 tons, passenger cars with over 16 seats and vehicles with a total load of over 6 tons from passing through Tan Thuan 1 bridge (Tan Thuan ward).
In addition, the vehicle height when crossing the bridge must not exceed 2.5m.

According to Tuoi Tre Online , along Huynh Tan Phat Street leading to Tan Thuan 1 Bridge, authorities have installed signs and banners with information about the vehicle ban and have signs with alternative route instructions.
On the first morning of the traffic adjustment day, the flow of vehicles, mainly motorbikes and cars, easily passed over the bridge. Serious traffic jams and congestion did not appear.

Also on the same morning, the units installed height restriction frames and signs at the foot of this 120-year-old bridge, to limit the number of vehicles and help people understand the traffic organization adjustments, avoiding violations of new regulations.
However, some truck drivers did not have the information, and when they reached the foot of the bridge, they saw the height limit frame and the sign prohibiting total weight, so they had to back up and turn around, causing traffic to be slightly congested at times.

Many people expressed their agreement with the above change, to ensure safety when crossing the bridge which has shown many signs of deterioration.
However, according to them, the authorities should install more banners and signs for drivers to easily observe and avoid making mistakes due to not being familiar with the changes in the first few days.

After 120 years of operation, Tan Thuan 1 Bridge has exceeded its design life span and shows many signs of deterioration, so it must "endure" a load ban to ensure safety.

According to the October 2025 inspection results of the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center, this over 100-year-old bridge is not capable of bearing the load according to HL93 standard (road bridge design standard for heavy trucks - PV).
Recently, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has agreed on the policy of researching and investing in the project of upgrading and expanding Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and building a bridge to replace the existing Tan Thuan 1 Bridge, with a total estimated cost of 2,950 billion VND.
