Ho Chi Minh City: Traffic congestion increased by 24% compared to the same period in 2024

On the afternoon of December 4, the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the City Party Committee coordinated with the Department of Culture and Information of Ho Chi Minh City to hold a press conference to provide information on socio -economic issues in the city.

At the press conference, Mr. Nguyen Kien Giang , Deputy Head of the Department of Traffic Works Maintenance and Operation Management, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, said that according to the results of collected data and simulation software of the Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center, the traffic congestion situation in the past time was quite high, increasing by 24% compared to the same period in 2024.

Some routes have significantly increased traffic density, showing that traffic congestion still occurs in many areas. The average speed is 34.9 km/h. The average speed in some areas such as: the city center is 34.3 km/h, the East is 35.3 km/h, the West is 33.4 km/h, the South is 32.7 km/h, the North is 39.2 km/h.

According to the representative of the Department of Construction, there are many reasons leading to traffic congestion in recent times, such as: high traffic volume, especially private cars and motorbikes during rush hours; traffic infrastructure system has not kept up with the development speed of vehicles and travel needs, many roads have narrow cross-sections, intersections have not been synchronously renovated, lack of public parking lots, leading to frequent overloading.

In addition, Ho Chi Minh City is currently constructing many works on the exploited roads, occupying the road surface, narrowing the traffic lanes, causing local traffic jams at some points. At the same time, the situation of encroachment on the roadside and sidewalks is still complicated; traffic accidents and vehicle incidents on the main routes have not been promptly resolved, leading to local congestion; awareness of traffic law compliance of a part of traffic participants is still limited.

In order to meet the increasing demand for travel and freight transport at the end of the year, the Department of Construction has coordinated with many units to deploy solutions to prevent congestion, focusing on the central area, Cat Lai port, Tan Son Nhat airport and key routes. Strengthen inspection and rectification of construction work on exploited roads, urge to speed up progress, reduce barriers, and restore the road surface. At the same time, continue to review, evaluate, and enhance the application of science and technology; replicate models of applying digital technology and intelligent traffic (AI) in traffic monitoring and control.
