Farmers in the digital age

With the province's attention and investment, farmers have found many new directions, promoting the application of science and technology, being flexible and responsive in production and livestock farming, keeping pace with market trends, and creating high economic value. From there, they enrich themselves and contribute to the formation of Agriculture 4.0.

Farmers in the digital age

The grape cultivation model following VietGAP standards implemented by Mr. Pham Van Quynh in Lam Xuyen village, Yen Lac commune, generates an income of several hundred million VND per year.

After graduating from the University of Transport and Communications and securing a stable job in Hanoi, Pham Van Quynh, from Lam Xuyen village, Yen Lac commune, decided to leave the city and return to his hometown, determined to become wealthy there. Through research and field trips, Quynh observed many farmers in other provinces becoming rich from grape cultivation. In 2019, he boldly acquired his family's farmland and started a business cultivating black grapes. He traveled to the Bac Giang Center for Agricultural and Forestry Science and Technology Application to purchase nearly a hundred grape seedlings for experimental planting. In the first season, due to traditional planting and care techniques, the yield was not as expected, with many pests and diseases. Undeterred, Quynh continued to research, learn, and innovate, with the application of science and technology playing a crucial role. Because grapevines are sensitive to rainwater, fog, and easily susceptible to disease, Mr. Quynh invested in a sturdy trellis system and greenhouses to mitigate the harmful effects of weather and pests, ensuring optimal growth and development of the vines. An automated irrigation system reduces labor costs and controls humidity, while fertilizing is simplified as the fertilizer is mixed with the irrigation water.

Along with investing in a greenhouse system, Mr. Quynh strictly adheres to VietGAP standards for grape cultivation and care. As a result, the grapes are plump, have a sweet and refreshing taste, and yield high productivity. Recognizing the potential of grape cultivation, Mr. Quynh continued to expand the scale of his greenhouses, planting more milk grapes and opening a tour and experience service. Currently, his farm has more than 5,000 grapevines, of which more than 4,000 are producing fruit, with an average yield of 16 tons per year. The average selling price is 150,000 VND/kg for black grapes and 300,000 VND/kg for milk grapes. The average annual revenue is billions of VND.

To find outlets for his products, Mr. Quynh has intensified promotion on digital platforms, e-commerce sites, and registered his products under the OCOP program. Currently, the black and milk grapes from his vineyard are being purchased by organic food stores in Hanoi . Every year, during the grape harvest season (May and October), the vineyard welcomes thousands of visitors and student groups who come to tour and experience the vineyard.

Also passionate about agriculture , thanks to her perseverance, hard work, eagerness to learn, dynamism, and creativity, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy from Tam Dao commune has succeeded and become wealthy through pig farming. Starting in 2009 with 10 pigs, however, due to lack of experience, mainly manual farming techniques, and unscientific disease prevention methods, the herd suffered from many diseases in the early years. Ms. Thuy decided to innovate her farming techniques and processes towards biosafety, applying science and technology to improve productivity. Using all her family's capital plus a bank loan, Ms. Thuy invested billions of dong in building enclosed pigpens far from residential areas, completely isolated from the surrounding environment for better disease prevention. The barns are equipped with cooling systems, ventilation fans, feeders, waterers, and automated barn cleaning... The waste treatment system is well-invested, with part of it processed into fuel for cooking and part being fermented with microorganisms to make fertilizer for crops.

Each pig is numbered and its vaccination and disease control are monitored using software, helping to limit disease outbreaks and scientifically track the growth of the herd. As a result, the herd has thrived, growing from 50 sows to 200 sows and over 1,000 market pigs. Remarkably, even during outbreaks of African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease, her pig herd remained healthy.

Thanks to her scientific farming model, Thuy's farm sells more than 4,000 commercial pigs and thousands of breeding pigs to the market each year. Her average income is billions of VND annually. With her outstanding achievements in economic development, Nguyen Thi Thuy was honored as one of 63 exemplary farmers nationwide and awarded the title "Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer" in 2020.

Farmers in the digital age

Thanks to their dynamism and resourcefulness, many farmers have become wealthy by applying modern science and technology to their production.

Along with farmers nationwide, many farmers in Phu Tho province are constantly learning, exploring, and boldly transforming traditional production methods into large-scale, concentrated production, promoting the application of science and technology; and promoting and selling products on digital platforms, which has opened up many opportunities to access large businesses and markets inside and outside the province.

To promote the development of high-tech agriculture and increase farmers' income, the province has allocated hundreds of billions of VND in recent years to support farmers with seedlings, livestock, fertilizers, technology, disease prevention and control, land leasing, etc. Emphasis has been placed on models for producing safe vegetables, fruits, and other commodities according to VietGAP standards. To date, hundreds of models of clean, bio-safe agricultural production applying science and technology have been established in the province, contributing to increased labor productivity and farmers' income, and gradually building a modern agricultural sector.
