In a statement sent to Fox News , CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins said the attacks were aimed at protecting U.S. forces from "threats from Iran."
According to Hawkins, the targets attacked included missile launchers and Iranian ships allegedly deploying mines.
The statement read: "U.S. forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect soldiers from threats posed by Iranian forces."
A CENTCOM spokesperson also affirmed that the U.S. military remains "restrained" in the context of the current ceasefire.
The US has not released further details about the scale or extent of the damage from the operation, while the Iranian government has not commented on the incident.
Earlier, the semi-official Fars news agency quoted local residents as saying they had heard several consecutive explosions in Bandar Abbas, but the exact cause and location had not yet been determined.
Fars also noted that similar explosions occurred almost simultaneously in Sirik and Jask, strategic areas along Iran's southern coast and near the vital shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident occurred as Washington and Tehran were conducting diplomatic efforts to reach a broader agreement on a ceasefire and Iran's nuclear program, following months of escalating military tensions in the Middle East.
