On April 23, the Historical Science Association of Thua Thien - Hue province organized a scientific conference with the theme "220 years of Vietnam's National Name - Historical Journeys (1804-2024)".

Deputy Secretary of the Thua Thien - Hue Provincial Party Committee Phan Ngoc Tho said that the workshop gathered scientists and researchers from universities and research institutes at the central and local levels; it was of great significance in contributing many perspectives and comprehensive in-depth assessments of the value of the Vietnamese National Name through the ages. On the other hand, through valuable historical sources, experts clarified the development achievements and position of the country so that the Vietnamese National Name will always be the pride of the nation, affirming the independence and sovereignty of the nation.

For Thua Thien - Hue, the birthplace of the Vietnamese national name, research projects will shed light on the historical and cultural values that many generations of predecessors have built. This is also the basis for contributing to the successful implementation of Resolution 54/NQ-TW of the Politburo on building Thua Thien - Hue into a centrally-run city, Mr. Phan Ngoc Tho emphasized.

Standing Deputy Secretary of Thua Thien - Hue Provincial Party Committee Phan Ngoc Tho spoke at the Workshop.

In the year of Giap Ty, on the day of Dinh Suu, February 17 (March 28, 1804), King Gia Long held a Khanh An ceremony at the Thai Mieu (in the Imperial Citadel) and named the country Viet Nam. In the edict, the king affirmed: “When an emperor establishes a country, he must first respect the national name to clearly show unity… the national name is changed to Viet Nam, to build a great foundation and pass it on for a long time. All our country's affairs related to the national name and correspondence with foreign countries must use Viet Nam as the country's name, and we must no longer use the old name An Nam.”

Under the Nguyen Dynasty, the national name Vietnam was maintained for nearly four decades, through the reigns of two kings, Gia Long and Minh Mang. In the 19th year of Minh Mang (1838), the king changed the national name from Viet Nam to Dai Nam.

In 1945, the August Revolution succeeded, ending the Nguyen Dynasty. On September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh in the Declaration of Independence declared the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Throughout historical periods, the National Name of Vietnam has affirmed the position of an independent and unified country.
