According to AFP, in the early morning of May 13, Mount Kanlaon – one of the active volcanoes on Negros Island in central the Philippines – unexpectedly erupted, creating a thick column of ash that rose up to 4.5 kilometers and spread westward.

The eruption lasted approximately five minutes, occurring at 2:55 a.m. (local time), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The institute assessed it as a "moderate-intensity" explosion.

Camera footage shows a volcano erupting in the Philippines, sending a plume of ash approximately 4.5 kilometers high.

According to PHIVOLCS, hot rock fragments and flows of volcanic material have caused fires in some areas of vegetation near the summit.

A rumbling sound like thunder was recorded by residents in nearby areas, and many localities reported light ash falling after the eruption.

Although there were no casualties, authorities maintained a level 3 alert on a 5-level scale for the volcano due to the risk of short-term, moderate eruptions that could be life-threatening.

This warning was issued following the eruption last December and remains in effect.

Residents are advised to stay away from the area within a 6km radius of the crater due to the risk from hot springs, flying rocks, landslides, and ash.

Mount Kanlaon is one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines, and has had several eruptions over the past century, most recently in April of this year.

In 1996, an eruption at this mountain killed three climbers when hot rocks fell on them near the summit.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region of intense geological activity containing more than half of the world's volcanoes.

The most devastating volcanic eruption in recent times was that of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, which killed over 800 people and affected millions.

The Philippine authorities are currently monitoring the situation and urging citizens to remain vigilant, stay updated with information from relevant agencies, and follow evacuation instructions when directed.
