The WWF project, which invested in a rice-shrimp farming model in Phuoc Long district and Gia Rai town (Bac Lieu province), applying scientific and technological advancements to production, has truly changed the traditional rice-shrimp farming practices of farmers compared to before.
The productivity and quality of shrimp and rice have improved significantly. Local authorities and cooperatives should encourage the replication of this model in the future.
Previously, the area north of National Highway 1A was a "desolate wasteland," where farmers mainly produced rice once a year, and in many places, the land was left fallow and unsuitable for cultivation.
Mr. Do Minh Thang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Gia Rai Town (Bac Lieu province), said: "Since the shift in production, the locality has encouraged the implementation of the rice-shrimp farming model, and at first, farmers were hesitant."
However, after seeing the model yield positive results, many farmers began implementing it. As a result, the area under rice-shrimp farming has expanded significantly. To further enhance the effectiveness of the rice-shrimp farming model, Bac Lieu province has invested in building a complete irrigation system and enclosed dikes to proactively regulate water for production.
As a result, production efficiency per unit area has increased significantly, and farmers' lives have improved considerably."
