All five schools held entrance exams on July 1st to limit the number of "virtual candidates"—students who can only register for and be admitted to one school. Previously, only two schools in Area 1 held entrance exams: Nguyen An Khuong Secondary School (Hoc Mon commune) and Nguyen Huu Tho Secondary School (Tan Hung ward). This year, both have switched to a selection-based system. The announcement, made so close to the end of the school year, surprised many families who had been preparing their children for the exams since the beginning of 5th grade.
In reality, the pressure to enroll in 6th grade at high-quality schools remains very high. Although the education sector affirms that there will be no entrance exams for 6th grade, the assessment of abilities still creates significant competitive pressure for students in their final year of primary school. Therefore, any changes related to the enrollment method should be announced early and kept stable.
Nguyen An Ninh Secondary School is an example of significant changes for the upcoming school year. Previously, the school only conducted entrance exams for the preparatory classes, while the general classes were admitted based on designated zones. However, in the 2026-2027 school year, 100% of the 6th grade students will be admitted through entrance exams. The enrollment quota has increased from 190 (5 classes) to 280 students (8 classes); the enrollment area has also expanded to include more geographical areas. The admission requirements this year have also been adjusted to broaden opportunities for students.
Accordingly, applicants must have achieved an "Excellent" level in grade 5; and their end-of-year periodic test scores in both Mathematics and Vietnamese in grades 4 and 5 must be 9 points or higher. This year's assessment has significantly changed, with the time allotted increasing from 60 to 90 minutes, including both multiple-choice and essay questions to assess English proficiency, logical thinking, mathematics, reading comprehension, and writing skills. The policy of awarding bonus points has also been expanded, with students winning provincial or city-level prizes in cultural, artistic, sports, and science and technology competitions receiving additional points.
Adjusting the admissions survey method is necessary following the administrative boundary reorganization. However, what parents desire most is stability. From the following school years, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and local authorities need to promptly announce the admissions survey plan so that parents and students can be more proactive in building their learning path, reducing unnecessary pressure on students in their final year of primary school.
