Internal instability
Ruben Amorim's departure wasn't really a surprise. Considering the first half of the season, the Portuguese manager even deserved to be sacked sooner. But Manchester United waited until Amorim "exploded" and started criticizing the board before issuing his dismissal notice. However, the problem is that even with Amorim gone, it's not certain that the internal situation at Old Trafford will be stable.
Since taking over the club, owner Jim Ratcliffe hasn't made many good decisions. In particular, he hasn't helped the team improve its performance. Last season, Manchester United finished 18th, just above the relegation zone. That's a result many fans want to erase from their memories. Part of the reason stems from his decision to choose manager Ruben Amorim.
At the time, Sporting Director Dan Ashworth strongly discouraged Jim Ratcliffe because he understood that Manchester United's squad lacked the players and ability to play with a three-centre-back formation. Just a few months later, Ratcliffe sacked Ashworth, despite having put in considerable effort to bring him from Newcastle. Manchester United's new Sporting Director, Jason Wilcox, was also unable to resolve the issue. He was even suspected of being a target of Amorim's attacks for not providing enough funds for the Portuguese manager to buy players to meet the demands of the three-centre-back system.
Besides conflicts with the manager, the Man United leadership is also struggling with ongoing staff cuts and cost-cutting measures. Therefore, Amorim is only part of the problem. Sacking him may not necessarily improve Man United's situation immediately.
Confused by the 3-centre-back formation?
In recent seasons, Manchester United have often achieved positive results after changing managers. They typically employ the formula of appointing legends as interim managers. Previously, this was the case with big names like Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy. This time, it's Darren Fletcher's turn. However, the Scottish strategist may find it difficult to replicate the success of his former teammates.
The problem stems from Manchester United's tactical choices. For over a year, Man United has been accustomed to playing with three central defenders. Even though the results haven't been ideal, the players have become somewhat used to that tactic. Now, with Fletcher in charge, he faces a difficult situation if he tries to force the team back to a two-central-defender system. On the other hand, if he continues with the old style of play, Fletcher will also struggle because it's not his forte.
Because of this, even though Burnley is a weak team in the Premier League this season, Fletcher, in a difficult situation, may not necessarily be able to successfully turn things around and bring a good result for Man United.
