Yesterday (Vietnam time), the White House confirmed that it had signed a power transfer agreement with the transition team of US President-elect Donald Trump, according to Reuters.

On the same day, President-elect Donald Trump announced a series of nominees for various cabinet and White House positions after he takes office on January 20, 2025. Specifically, economist Kevin Hassett, former Director of the White House Council of Economic Advisors (2017-2019), was nominated to head the National Economic Council. Hassett served as chief economic advisor to the late Senator John McCain during the 2000 primary election and as a veteran economic advisor to the campaigns of George W. Bush in 2004, McCain in 2008, and Mitt Romney in 2012.

Mr. Trump also chose lawyer Jamieson Greer to be the U.S. Trade Representative in the next administration.

Is President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet a 'step back' in diversity?

"Jamesson Greer will lead the U.S. Trade Representative's Office, focusing on efforts to address the massive U.S. trade deficit, protect American manufacturing, agriculture , and services, and open up export markets everywhere," Reuters quoted Trump as saying. Greer previously served as chief of staff to former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the architect of the initial plan to impose tariffs on approximately $370 billion worth of goods imported from China during Trump's first term and to renegotiate free trade agreements between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico.

Trump's other nominations included Jim O'Neill as Undersecretary of Health and Human Services; and Jay Bhattacharya as head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is the agency that allocates public funding for U.S. medical research efforts, with a budget of approximately $47.3 billion. The NIH director oversees a total of 27 institutes and centers conducting early-stage research on everything from vaccines to emerging diseases to new drugs.

Trump also announced his choice of John Phelan, founder and chairman of the Florida-based private investment firm Rugger, for Secretary of the Navy. Phelan has no military service, according to The Hill . Meanwhile, Vince Haley, who co-led the speechwriting team during Trump's first term, was nominated to be Director of the Domestic Policy Council, the body responsible for implementing the government's agenda.

On the same day, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned President-elect Trump of serious economic consequences awaiting both countries if he implemented a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada after taking office.

China, Mexico, and Canada issued warnings after Trump threatened to raise tariffs on his first day in office.

"One imposed tariff will be followed by a retaliatory tariff, and so on, until we put common business at risk," Reuters quoted from the letter sent to Mr. Trump. According to her, tariffs would cause inflation and lead to widespread unemployment in both countries.
