It is known that President Trump called President Putin on August 18 to inform him about the meeting with leader Zelensky at the White House.
Putin's aide, Yury Ushakov, said the phone call lasted 40 minutes and both Russian and US leaders expressed their readiness to discuss a solution to the Ukrainian conflict with Mr. Zelensky.

After the Alaska summit, President Putin stressed that "the meeting brought us closer to peace ". However, the Kremlin leader reiterated that eliminating the root causes of the conflict would be the key to resolving the problem.
According to Moscow, to achieve lasting peace, Ukraine needs to abandon its ambitions to become a NATO member; demilitarize and recognize current territorial realities.
