Faced with increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, PetroVietnam Oil Corporation has identified sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as the optimal solution to support the decarbonization of the aviation industry. Based on this, PetroVietnam Oil Corporation and Keppel Corporation have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Intent (MOI) to establish a framework for strategic cooperation in research, development and gradual deployment of SAF in Vietnam.
The Memorandum of Intent aims at three key cooperation contents: Assessing the potential and feasibility of SAF production projects in Vietnam; surveying technology, input materials, supply chains and feasible investment options; aiming to form the first SAF production facility in Vietnam and contributing to replacing traditional fuels, reducing CO₂ emissions in the aviation industry.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Pham Van Thanh - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Petrolimex affirmed: "Vietnam National Petroleum Group is always aware of its role and responsibility in energy transition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 according to the Government 's commitment at COP26". The cooperation in developing SAF is a strategic step, both ensuring energy security and promoting sustainable development of the aviation industry. He affirmed that Petrolimex will closely coordinate with Keppel and related parties to seriously, effectively and substantially implement the research. "Petrolimex expects this cooperation to contribute to building a clean fuel value chain model, from raw material supply, production to distribution, suitable for Vietnam's conditions and meeting international standards." - He emphasized.
On the partner side, Ms. Cindy Lim - CEO of Infrastructure, Keppel Corporation expressed her delight at Keppel’s partnership with Petrolimex in promoting a sustainable aviation fuel ecosystem in Vietnam. This collaboration is based on Keppel’s experience, technology platform and Petrolimex’s large-scale energy infrastructure with market leadership and nationwide petroleum product distribution infrastructure network. Together, the two parties will develop SAF solutions towards Vietnam’s net-zero goal as well as carbon reduction in the aviation sector.
In addition to cooperation on SAF, Ms. Cindy Lim also said that Keppel Group wishes to expand cooperation with Petrolimex in the fields of distributed energy, battery storage, and smart energy management to contribute to promoting the comprehensive strategic partnership between Singapore and Vietnam through green economic projects.
In order to concretize the direction of sustainable development cooperation, on the same morning, Keppel Group coordinated with Petrolimex to organize a SAF Workshop in Hanoi, focusing on presenting the results of feasibility studies related to raw materials, markets, SAF technology, as well as analyzing and surveying the current status of potential deployment locations. At the workshop, delegates also discussed the Government's policy orientation, the ability to access green capital and develop a specific implementation roadmap.
