On the afternoon of July 25, U23 Vietnam defeated U23 Philippines with a score of 2-1 in the semi-finals of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship. This was the second consecutive match in which coach Kim Sang Sik's team missed many good opportunities and only won by a 1-goal margin.
Faced with the opinion that the U23 Vietnam strikers did not play well, center back Pham Ly Duc spoke up to defend his teammates.
"Maybe it's just bad luck. Coach Kim Sang Sik will train the team more," Ly Duc said briefly.
This is the third consecutive match that center back Pham Ly Duc has been in the starting lineup. He and Nguyen Hieu Minh are the two defenders who scored for U23 Vietnam.
Against U23 Philippines, U23 Vietnam scored 2 goals thanks to Nguyen Dinh Bac and Nguyen Xuan Bac to complete the comeback with a score of 2-1.
This result does not accurately reflect the match situation, because U23 Vietnam missed many good opportunities, including Dinh Bac himself hitting the crossbar and post at least 3 times.
"This was a dedicated match for both teams. U23 Philippines is a strong team and played very hard. Even though we lost first, we were still united and fought until the last minute," Ly Duc shared.
When asked about the feeling of playing in an empty stadium, Ly Duc did not feel disappointed.
"With or without spectators, we are still the ones who decide the match," said the midfielder born in 2003.
With the victory over U23 Philippines, U23 Vietnam was awarded 500 million VND by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF). After this match, Coach Kim and his team will wait for their opponents, U23 Thailand or U23 Indonesia, in the final of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, taking place on July 29.
