According to Ukrainian officials, the capital Kyiv and many other locations across the country were hit by a large-scale attack using missiles and drones in the early hours of May 24.

In a statement released the same day, the Polish Air Force announced that it had deployed fighter jets to protect its national airspace. Aircraft from NATO allies, currently on duty on the alliance's eastern flank, also participated in the operation.

According to The Kyiv Independent on May 24, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said that several fires had broken out in the Podilskyi district in the center of the capital following ballistic missile attacks.

Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said damage was reported in several districts of the city. Ukrainian officials confirmed at least one death and 24 injuries, many of whom required hospitalization.

According to information from Ukraine, at least seven high-rise apartment buildings in Kyiv were damaged after the attack. In addition, several civilian infrastructure facilities such as supermarkets, shopping centers, dormitories, garages, and warehouses were also affected. Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force issued a nationwide airstrike warning, stating that dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones were detected heading towards the capital Kyiv during the night of May 23rd and the early morning of May 24th.

These developments occurred against the backdrop of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's earlier warning that Russia could launch larger-scale attacks on various areas of Ukrainian territory.

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on May 24 that its air defense forces intercepted and destroyed dozens of drones during the night of May 23 and early morning of May 24. The RIA Novosti news agency, citing the ministry's statement, reported that a total of 33 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down in various locations across Russia.

The previous day, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) announced that its transport facility had been attacked by at least 10 drones, damaging eight buses carrying employees.
