On August 4th, the French Foreign Ministry urged French citizens in Lebanon to leave the Middle Eastern country "as soon as possible," amid growing concerns about an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as fears of a wider conflict in the region.

In its advisory, the French Foreign Ministry stated: "In the context of a volatile security situation, we once again urge French citizens to note that there are still direct commercial flights as well as flights to France, and we suggest that citizens arrange their travel plans now to leave Lebanon as soon as possible."

The French Foreign Ministry also "urgently requested" its citizens not to travel to Lebanon due to concerns about the risk of conflict in the region following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran, on July 31 – a day after an Israeli airstrike in Beirut killed Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

France estimates that around 23,000 of its citizens are currently in Lebanon. In July alone, approximately 10,000 French citizens visited the country.

The latest move by the French Foreign Ministry is similar to that of the US and UK on August 3rd, which advised its citizens to leave Lebanon. Sweden also announced on August 3rd the closure of its embassy in Beirut and urged its citizens to leave Lebanon.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated following the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran. Hamas and Iran accused Israel of carrying out the assassination and vowed retaliation. Israel denied the accusation.

Regarding the regional situation, Iranian state media reported that Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi will arrive in Iran on August 4th, in a rare visit to discuss regional developments following the assassination of the Hamas leader in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart.

The Jordanian Foreign Minister's visit comes after the US and its partners – including France, the UK, Italy, and Egypt – have been holding continuous diplomatic contacts aimed at preventing escalating tensions in the region.
