Hypertension is currently one of the most common and dangerous diseases in Vietnam. With no obvious symptoms in the early stages, hypertension progresses silently and is the leading cause of serious complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction and heart failure. According to 2019 statistics by WHO, there are 14.3 million Vietnamese people aged 30-79 with hypertension. While only 47% are diagnosed, 30% are treated and 13% have their blood pressure controlled. This not only increases the burden of treatment but also reduces the quality of life of people, especially middle-aged and elderly people.
High blood pressure is a medical problem that reduces the quality of life of the elderly.
In that context, the campaign "Blood pressure measurement in May" organized by the Vietnam Hypertension Association in collaboration with Servier Vietnam Company has become an annual activity with profound community significance. The main goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases, promote the habit of regular blood pressure monitoring and early intervention of risk factors. This year, the campaign continues to be expanded with the active participation of the pharmacy system - which has the ability to reach people right in the community, thereby making proactive blood pressure screening a habit in daily life.
Pharmacity active acccompanies: expanding coverage, standardizing implementation processes
As one of the pharmacy chains with a national coverage of more than 1,000 points of sale, Pharmacity has proactively participated in the "May Blood Pressure Measurement" campaign by setting up free measurement points in many provinces and cities. Before the campaign began, the entire team of pharmacists at participating staff were thoroughly trained, from blood pressure measurement techniques to brief, easy-to-understand consulting techniques for customers about blood pressure indexes and common risk factors. At the same time, the staff were also involved on the initial handling process for cases of blood pressure exceeding the threshold, ensuring that each measurement is performed correctly and safely.
Pharmacity focuses on communicating about high blood pressure through instructional materials right at the point of sale.
In addition to deploying measurement points, Pharmacity also focuses on on-site communication to raise community awareness. Pharmacies participating in the campaign are equipped with simple, easy-to-understand instruction manuals, information sheets and recommendation boards, helping customers understand the blood pressure thresholds to pay attention to as well as questions to discuss with pharmacists. The combination of measuring indexes and on-site consultation has helped many people learn about their blood pressure status for the first time, and at the same time receive timely guidance on how to monitor, adjust their lifestyle or get further examination if necessary. Thanks to that, each measurement is not only a technical operation but also becomes an opportunityto educate the community about health directly and effectively.
In parallel, the Livestream program "Blood pressure above 130/80, don't be lazy to ask the doctor" has also been deployed on Pharmacity's official fanpage with the participation of leading medical experts, to provide useful information and answer questions from the community about high blood pressure.
Measuring blood pressure - daily health care habits
After nearly a month of implementation, the "Blood Pressure Measurement in May" campaign at the Pharmacity pharmacy chain has attracted thousands of participants. Records from the measurement points show that people are increasingly interested in proactively monitoring their blood pressure - not only when symptoms appear but also as part of their daily health care routine. Measuring blood pressure at the pharmacy has helped many people detect abnormal blood pressure readings for the first time and promptly take early action, minimizing the risk of cardiovascular complications in the future.
Hypertension counseling activities are widely deployed by Pharmacy to the community.
The "Blood Pressure Measurement Month in May" campaign not only spreads the message about the need to control blood pressure, but also shows an effective direction in cooperation between the health system and pharmaceutical retail enterprises. Bringing screening activities to each residential area through the pharmacy network has contributed to expanding access and encouraging people to be more proactive in disease prevention. Pharmacity representative said that the unit will continue to maintain the model of free blood pressure measurement at points of sale in the coming time, while gradually expanding other health screening programs such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia and metabolic disorders.
Through small actions such as a free blood pressure measurement, the campaign has contributed to promoting a change in awareness in the community - that controlling blood pressure and avoiding complications does not start in the hospital, but can start in each person's daily life, being proactive and self-controlled.
