Entomologists in Thailand were stunned to find a species of tarantula spider with colors resembling electric sparks in the south of the country.
Electric blue tarantulas in southern Thailand.
Researchers from the Khon Kaen University Entomology Museum and the Natural History Museum said the spider, named Chilobrachys natanicharum, has a blue-purple color similar to the color of electric sparks.
They called the spider's rare coloration a "fascinating phenomenon." "Blue coloration in animals is a fascinating and relatively rare phenomenon in nature. Blue coloration in tarantulas represents a unique example of structural color evolution at least eight times," the researchers wrote in a paper announcing the discovery .
The species was chosen from a nationwide auction, and was eventually named after executives from real estate company Nichada Properties. Images show the spider with blue-purple hairs on its legs and body.
The spider's leg coloration is "unique" and "iridescent," the researchers said. Females and juvenile males of the species have more purple hues, while males have a more striking blue hue.
This spider lives mainly in the mangrove forests of southern Thailand, often taking shelter in tree hollows, or in evergreen forests.
Habitat loss and hunting of tarantulas have affected the species' numbers, so researchers emphasize the need to conserve and protect tarantulas.
