Vovinam, or Vietnamese martial arts, is a Vietnamese martial art. More than just a daily exercise for improving health, Vovinam also helps develop essential self-defense skills, cultivate a good lifestyle and moral character, foster discipline, and increase endurance and willpower. Therefore, this martial art is developing strongly in various localities within the province.
Vovinam is developed based on traditional Vietnamese wrestling, combined with the best elements of martial arts from around the world . Vovinam's techniques share many similarities with other martial arts but still maintain their unique characteristics. Vovinam includes basic martial arts techniques such as punches, kicks, sweeps, blocks, knee strikes, elbow strikes, grappling, leg techniques, and submission holds, as well as weapon training. Furthermore, it incorporates the practice of hard and soft techniques, and Qigong to promote health and well-being.
Mr. Pham Minh Ngoc – Head of the Sports and Physical Education Department, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (CST), and Chairman of the Provincial Vovinam Federation – stated: The Vovinam training movement is currently developing steadily in all 10 districts, towns, and cities in the province, with over 60 clubs. This is one of the key sports that the Provincial CST invests in, participating in youth competitions, championships, and the National Sports Festival. In addition, the Provincial Department of Education and Training is paying attention to and gradually introducing Vovinam into schools, organizing the Provincial Vovinam Phu Dong Sports Festival, and participating in the National Student Vovinam competition… These events provide opportunities for athletes to compete, gain experience, and refine their techniques, contributing to improving the quality of physical education and promoting the martial arts movement in schools.
Currently, some schools are proactively coordinating with Vovinam clubs to open martial arts classes for students in the evenings on the school grounds, such as Phan Chu Trinh High School, Phan Boi Chau High School (Phan Thiet), Bac Phan Thiet Primary School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (Bac Binh)... The training content is designed to suit the age group and the requirements for physical training, absorbing the spirit of martial arts, and applying it for self-defense in dangerous situations.
Coach Pham Van That, in charge of the Vovinam club at Phan Boi Chau High School, said: "The class currently has 40 students. During training, for students who meet the skill and physical requirements, the club will coordinate with relevant departments to organize tests and examinations for belt and rank promotions. In addition, every year the club also selects students with good professional skills to participate in tournaments."
Originating from Vovinam clubs within the mass movement and in schools, many martial artists have achieved high results when participating in major tournaments. Most recently, at the 2022 National Vovinam Tournament for High School Students, with outstanding results, 82 students were awarded certificates of merit by the Provincial People's Committee, including many 9th-grade students who were directly admitted to high school…
Mr. Pham Minh Ngoc added: To further develop the Vovinam movement in depth, in the coming time, the Provincial Vovinam Federation will strengthen and improve the quality of existing clubs. In addition, it will build and develop the movement extensively among all social strata, especially focusing on youth and students. Preparations for the Binh Thuan Provincial Youth Tournament in July 2023, belt promotion exams, referee training courses, and the National Phu Dong Sports Festival in 2024… will create a broad foundation for developing talent and training future athletes, contributing to the overall achievements of the province's sports.
