Behind the operating room door

Inside the operating room is a closed world, where everything operates in strict order to serve a single goal: protecting the patient's life. It is a space where only the sounds of machines, the decisive voices of doctors, and skillful hands racing against time can be heard.

That day was a special case; the patient was Mr. NHH (49 years old, residing in Quang Tri province). Patient H. was diagnosed by doctors at Da Nang Oncology Hospital with upper third esophageal cancer along with stomach cancer, complicated by dysphagia.

Because patient H had two types of cancer simultaneously, the choice of surgical method was carefully considered by the doctors. Ultimately, the method of "total esophagectomy, gastrectomy, followed by reconstruction using the colon" was prescribed for patient H.

Performing routine esophageal surgery is a difficult technique, so the surgery for patient H. will be much more challenging, taking longer and requiring surgeons with extensive experience and expertise to perform precise dissection, accurately predict and control the risk of complications…

Inside the operating room, the rhythmic pace of the surgical nurses and anesthesia technicians followed a strict procedure. The surgery officially began. The atmosphere fell silent, broken only by the sounds of the monitoring machine, the clanging of stainless steel instruments, the electrosurgical knife, and occasionally the decisive voice of the surgeon giving orders. Something needed to be discussed, and the team began a professional exchange.

After 6 hours, patient H. underwent total esophagectomy and gastrectomy, with reconstruction using the colon. A jejunostomy tube was inserted for feeding via nasogastric tube, providing nutritional support. The patient was then transferred to the post-operative recovery room. Following the surgery, patient H.'s health improved significantly, the feeding tube was removed, and patient H. was able to eat and drink orally and resume normal daily activities.

Patient H. shared: “I am truly grateful to the medical staff of Department of Surgery 1 (Da Nang Oncology Hospital) and the doctors in the surgical team. I received thorough consultation from the doctors before the surgery, so I felt completely at ease and comfortable during my recovery. I truly felt reborn as my life gradually returned to normal, gaining 2 kilograms and being fully ready for the chemotherapy journey ahead.”

Inside the operating room is where life is recreated, where every moment holds unspoken stories; it is where modern medicine truly demonstrates its miraculous power. It is a silent space, where human faith and sacrifice are paramount.

When the operating room doors close, surgeons become the vanguard "soldiers" in the battle to reclaim life. Inside the operating room, all focus is on the precision and meticulousness of each operation, the perfect functioning of modern machinery and equipment, and especially the quietude to feel life in the surgeon's hands.

From its early days, Da Nang Oncology Hospital has been equipped with a system of machinery and equipment to effectively handle complex cancer surgeries. However, technology is only a tool; the skillful hands, judgment, steadfastness, and decisiveness of the doctors in unexpected situations are the decisive factors in the success of the surgery.

The operating room is not only a place where humans and technology intersect, but also a place where the talent and dedication of surgeons shine, affirming the role of the intellect in mastering technology—a role that no modern equipment can replace.

The pressure comes not only from their work but also from the expectations of patients and their families. A worried glance, a hopeful question can sometimes become an invisible burden for doctors. But above all, they remain steadfast, putting the health and lives of their patients above all else.

Many patients enter the hospital room filled with fear, but they always carry with them faith in the medical team. It is this faith that empowers the doctors to overcome challenges and dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to each surgery.

Behind the operating room doors lie silent sacrifices, extraordinary efforts, and unwavering faith in life. It's a place where doctors work not only with knowledge and skill but also with medical ethics and compassion. When life is a gift, then those who stand in the operating room are the gifts given to patients.

A surgeon confided: "We are not afraid of responsibility; we act out of a sense of responsibility and conscience as medical professionals. Here, we have knowledge and good intentions, but there is no room for indifference."
