The boy Mahito runs around in the middle of a crowd of people jostling each other amidst the smoke and fire of war, then he comes to a house and encounters a grey heron - the bird that appeared in the movie poster and confused the audience when Ghibli (the production company) first released the poster. Walking along the hallway of the house, he encounters some old ladies with strange shapes, and they are also surprised to see him so they immediately disperse.

The images that follow are even more fragmented and confusing. Mahito wanders alone into an old tower, when he stands in front of the tower, the dark entrance of this place suddenly lights up, the lights immediately turn on like a tunnel where trains enter and exit, reminiscent of the famous scene in the movie Spirited Away (2001). After that, he comes into contact with a series of mysterious creatures: white, transparent spirits floating in the air reminiscent of the creature that appeared in the forest in the work Princess Mononoke (1997), a fire creature with a human face reminiscent of Lucifer in the movie Howl's Moving Castle (2004), a bunch of toads crawling all over Mahito and a school of fish rushing around... This image follows the other, including a surreal image of Mahito touching a woman's body, her body immediately turning into water...
