Over the years, the Vietnamese diaspora has played a significant role in making pho increasingly popular on the world culinary map. From small family-run eateries to professional restaurants in major European cities, pho has become a close cultural bridge between Vietnam and its international friends.
However, this is the first time a multinational "cultural- diplomatic -community roadshow" model has been implemented in Europe, combining culinary promotion with connecting the Vietnamese community abroad and cultural diplomacy activities.
From an initial idea stemming from a desire to connect activities promoting Vietnamese culture in Europe, and subsequently receiving strong support from the Vietnamese community abroad, associations, and businesses both domestically and internationally, the journey to promote pho culture in Europe was simultaneously implemented in many European countries, traversing six countries and many major cities.
Notably, the program is not just a simple culinary promotion activity, but also a journey to spread Vietnamese cultural pride to the world through the image of a bowl of pho - a dish considered the "national soul and essence" of the nation.
According to Le Thi Thiet, President of the Ninh Binh Provincial Culinary Culture Association, the "Pho Cultural Roadshow Europe 2026" is not simply a program to promote Vietnamese cuisine, but also a journey to tell the story of Vietnam's land, people, and identity through the language of food. Through pho, the organizers want to use a powerful, "non-verbal language" to touch the hearts and emotions of international diners and Vietnamese expatriates abroad, introducing a Vietnam rich in identity, sophistication, and always open to integration.
Clearly, the program is not just about promoting pho; it has a much greater significance. It's a mission to convey the essence of Vietnamese culture and heritage, an opportunity to tell the story of Vietnam, its people, and its identity to international friends through the language of cuisine. This is especially meaningful in the context of the ongoing process of completing the "Vietnamese Pho" dossier for submission to UNESCO for inscription as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
