Behind those seemingly harmless views lies significant damage to the cultural and creative industries, as well as the risk of information insecurity for the users themselves.
"Bypassing the firewall" to see the temple.
With the openness of the internet, users can easily find links to watch free entertainment content that is publicly but illegally shared on the internet. The popularity of pirated websites is creating a habit of accessing free content among a segment of users. Many sites use enticing offers such as "watch for free," "no account registration required," "HD quality," etc., to attract viewers, causing traffic to increase rapidly every day.
In response to this situation, authorities and domestic internet service providers have intensified efforts to crack down on and block copyright-infringing websites. However, after being blocked, many other websites with similar interfaces and features quickly reappear.
According to observations by Culture reporters, many websites that were thought to be blocked can actually be accessed normally by users simply by installing supporting software. On social media groups, sharing "tricks to watch for free" is still openly taking place. With just a few simple steps, anyone can access websites that were previously warned against or blocked by authorities.
Mr. Nguyen Minh T. (Long Bien ward, Hanoi ) said that many people turn to pirated movie websites because many trending films are not yet fully available on legal streaming platforms. Despite being aware that this is aiding copyright infringement, the desire to watch "hot" content immediately still leads many users to choose pirated sites.
Determined to see this through to the end.
These instances of "free viewing" are contributing to intellectual property infringement, causing significant revenue losses for content producers and distributors, and distorting the business environment.
Recalling the story of K+, Associate Professor Dr. Do Canh Thin, Deputy Director of the Institute of Non-Traditional Security (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), said that this company had invested heavily in the pay-TV sector in Vietnam but had to reluctantly withdraw from the market. There were many reasons for the failure, but serious copyright infringement was considered one of the main causes.
Beyond economic losses, accessing websites that distribute illegal content also exposes users to numerous information security risks. Users may have their personal data stolen, be infected with malware, or be lured to gambling or scam websites online.
In reality, there have been many cases of people losing access to social media accounts, email, or having their personal data leaked after accessing pirated websites. These types of websites often contain malware, hidden links, or malicious advertising windows, making users easy targets for information theft. When personal data is leaked, users easily become victims of scams.
With a determination to establish order regarding copyright and protect consumers, authorities have recently taken strong measures, dismantling numerous illegal film and music streaming systems. This latest crackdown is expected to bring about a significant change in copyright protection in Vietnam.
According to the Ministry of Public Security , in the coming period, local police forces will continue to launch simultaneous campaigns to strictly handle violations in the spirit of "no forbidden zones, no exceptions," in accordance with the requirements of Prime Minister's Directive No. 38/CĐ-TTg on combating, preventing, and handling acts of intellectual property infringement.
According to Pham Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Director of the Copyright Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), this campaign has been implemented comprehensively and decisively from the outset to create a significant change in the protection of intellectual property rights in Vietnam. The crackdown will not stop at a single peak period but will be maintained regularly and long-term to improve the effectiveness of copyright law enforcement. Rights holders need to cooperate closely with authorities, providing complete documentation and evidence to resolve cases definitively, avoiding situations where efforts are abandoned midway.
"The most important thing is still to raise users' awareness of copyright protection. Each individual can choose to access different cultural products, but it must be in the spirit of respecting the creative efforts, intellectual property of the creator, and copyright," emphasized Ms. Pham Thi Kim Oanh.
