Today (May 25th), Hanoi , along with other provinces and cities in Northern and Central Vietnam, continues to experience scorching heat, with roads feeling burning hot and temperatures reaching 40°C in many areas.
According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, this is the second heatwave of May 2026. This heatwave is longer and more intense than the one from May 13-16, and is one of the three most severe heatwaves to occur in May since 2021.

This heatwave in Northern Vietnam is likely to last until around May 27th, gradually easing from May 28th onwards. In Central Vietnam, the heatwave may persist until around May 28th and gradually subside from May 29th.
According to meteorological agencies, there may be 2-3 more heatwaves in June. Temperatures during these heatwaves are likely to reach 37-39°C, and in some places even 41-42°C, especially in the western mountainous areas of provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue City.
According to the meteorological agency, due to the influence of El Nino, from now until August, the temperature across the country will tend to be 0.5-1°C higher than the multi-year average. This means that summer temperatures will be higher than average, and there will be more hot days and heatwaves than in 2025 and also higher than the average.
Under El Niño conditions, temperatures in most regions of Vietnam tend to be higher than average. Heatwaves may occur more frequently and intensely, with the possibility of setting new absolute temperature records. While typhoon and tropical depression activity may not be high, there is a potential for more unusual characteristics, both in intensity and trajectory.
It is noteworthy that El Nino typically causes rainfall deficits across much of the country, commonly ranging from 25 to 50%. Therefore, there is a high risk of localized or widespread drought in areas with high water demand for production and daily life during the dry season months of 2026.
Furthermore, it is necessary to be prepared for low rainfall leading to drought, saltwater intrusion, and water shortages in the early months of 2027 nationwide. Previously, the impact of El Nino caused record droughts and saltwater intrusion in the southern region in 2015-2016 and 2019-2020.
