According to the elders, Phu Liem village was formed around 1860 by some people surnamed Duong who migrated from the northern provinces. In the past, it was a low-lying, sparsely populated area. Thanks to land reclamation efforts, the population gradually increased.
Prior to 1930, the revolutionary movement against French colonialism was quite vibrant among the people. In mid-1940, the people's anti-colonial tax movement emerged, and at this time, Phu Liem village became a safe haven for high-ranking officials to operate in, and also a hiding place for revolutionary fighters from the former Thieu Hoa district whenever they were pursued by the French. At the end of 1940, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee decided to move the printing press of the Tu Do (Freedom) newspaper to Phu Hao and Phong Nien villages. Party branches stored documents and printing presses in several families in Phu Liem and Phong Nien villages. From there, through the Tu Do newspaper, revolutionary Party materials were secretly distributed. During this period, Phu Liem village also sheltered, hid, and protected many high-ranking officials who came to operate there.
The event on the night of December 29, 1941, when the self-defense fighters of Phu Liem village participated in distributing leaflets, and together with the self-defense forces of Tong Coc and Bat Nao, hoisted two flags – one red flag with a yellow star and the other with a hammer and sickle – onto the banyan tree at the village entrance, created a great stir and strongly impacted the revolutionary movement throughout the region. After the successful August Revolution, along with the people of the whole country participating in the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, Phu Liem village had hundreds of young people volunteer to defend the Fatherland, and eight martyrs fell for national independence. The village has six Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, 30 families with meritorious contributions to the revolution, and two families with meritorious contributions to the nation. Many families and individuals have been awarded numerous medals and decorations by the Party and the State.
In accordance with Resolution No. 786/ND-UBTVQH14 of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly, Phu Liem village merged with Phong Nien village to form Hamlet 5, Tho The commune (formerly). Nguyen Xuan Hong, Party Secretary and Head of Hamlet 5, stated: The hamlet currently has 147 households with 815 inhabitants. The people in the hamlet always uphold the spirit of solidarity, helping each other develop the economy and build new rural areas. In economic development, people have introduced many new high-yield plant and animal varieties into cultivation and livestock farming. Along National Highway 47, people have invested in developing trade, services, and construction industries. Therefore, the material and spiritual lives of the people are increasingly improving, with an average per capita income of 60 million VND/year. On average, each year, the hamlet has over 10 students who pass the entrance exams to universities. Many children from the village have excelled in their studies and hold important positions in state agencies, including two associate professors and one doctor... In the process of national renewal, generations of people in Village 5 in general, and Phu Liem village in particular, have always upheld revolutionary traditions, working together to build a more prosperous, beautiful, and civilized homeland and country.
