In Phu Long village, Pho Khanh commune (Duc Pho town, Quang Ngai province), nearly 40 women are involved in fishing in An Khe lagoon. Since An Khe lagoon became part of the Sa Huynh Culture National Special Monument system, dozens of women here have been both rowing small boats and working as tour guides, taking tourists on sightseeing and experiences on the lagoon.

With 40 years of experience fishing on An Khe Lagoon, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xi (56 years old, residing in Phu Long village, Pho Khanh commune) has become a reliable boat driver for tourists visiting the lagoon. According to Ms. Xi, in the past two years, An Khe Lagoon has attracted a large number of tourists, especially during the summer. On average, she transports 5-7 groups of tourists to visit the lagoon each day.
"Seeing An Khe Lagoon become a popular tourist destination, we are very happy and appreciative. On each trip, we guide, introduce, and take tourists to beautiful places in our homeland such as Coconut Beach and An Khe Creek. We hope that everyone who visits An Khe Lagoon will be happy, satisfied, and will return. Therefore, we always treat tourists with sincerity. As for money, we accept whatever tourists give us; we don't demand anything and never charge more than 100,000 VND per trip," Ms. Xi expressed.
Women in Phu Long village, Pho Khanh commune (Duc Pho town) are involved in community tourism.
Born and raised in the area right next to An Khe lagoon, Ms. Pham Thi Luat (56 years old, residing in Phu Long village, Pho Khanh commune) recounts that she has been involved in fishing with her parents since childhood. To date, she has spent 48 years fishing and collecting clams in An Khe lagoon.
Ms. Luat recounted that, due to her father's early death and the family's difficult circumstances, she began fishing with her mother on the An Khe lagoon at the age of eight to earn a living. By the age of twelve, she was able to take over rowing the boat from her mother. She continued this work until she got married, joining her husband in the river trade. Later, when her husband fell ill, she fished on the lagoon alone to make ends meet.
Generate a stable income.
"My life on An Khe lagoon, along with that of other fishermen, usually starts at 7 PM and lasts until dawn the next day. During the rainy season, the lagoon is full of seafood, and after each fishing trip, I earn between 500,000 and 700,000 VND, sometimes even up to 1 million VND. In the dry season, when the nets are lighter, I supplement my income by raking for clams and hunting for mussels in the lagoon, and also work as a boatman guiding tourists. That's how my husband and I raised five children, ensuring they grew up healthy and successful," Mrs. Luat happily recounted.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Phit, Head of the Women's Association of Phu Long village, there are currently nearly 40 women in Phu Long village who still make a living fishing on An Khe lagoon, of which about 10 live near An Khe lagoon and have taken on additional jobs transporting tourists on sightseeing tours of the lagoon.
"During the dry season, especially from May to August, a woman who takes tourists on sightseeing tours can earn an additional income of 100,000 to 500,000 VND per day. This is a promising direction for economic development, so in the long term, experienced women on the waterways in the area need guidance and support to become more professional in serving tourists and developing more sustainable livelihoods," Ms. Phit said.
The fruit orchards in Binh Thanh village (Hanh Nhan commune, Nghia Hanh district, Quang Ngai province) have become an interesting experiential destination for students.
Developing community tourism
Meanwhile, in Binh Thanh village, Hanh Nhan commune (Nghia Hanh district, Quang Ngai province), there are many fruit orchards with quality comparable to that of the Mekong Delta. Here, people grow varieties such as pomelo, rambutan, royal banana, and durian.
Besides fruit products, Binh Thanh village also preserves traditional crafts dating back over 100 years, such as mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, and the making of banh it, banh su se, and banh bot loc (types of Vietnamese cakes). These are interesting experiential services offered to tourists, especially students.
Therefore, many women here participate in tourism training courses and visit community tourism models in various places. From there, the farmers here established the Binh Thanh Agricultural - Service and Community Tourism Cooperative to develop community tourism to earn extra income and promote and introduce their homeland.

These days, Mrs. Tran Thi Nhon's house (66 years old, a member of the Binh Thanh Community Agricultural, Service and Tourism Cooperative) is constantly welcoming groups of visitors who come to experience the traditional craft of making cakes. What's special is that every step of the cake-making process is done manually by Mrs. Nhon, preserving the traditional method, requiring a lot of effort and meticulousness – this is what attracts tourists here. During peak tourist season, Mrs. Nhon welcomes about 4-5 groups each month, with each group consisting of 50-70 visitors who experience making cakes under her guidance.
"With over 30 years of experience making banh tet, banh bot loc, and other traditional Vietnamese cakes, I wholeheartedly guide tourists in making each cake, explaining the origins of each type so that they can better understand these traditional treats. To date, my traditional cake brand has become a favorite destination for tourists visiting Binh Thanh," said Mrs. Nhon.
Meanwhile, Ms. Le Thi Mon (a member of the Binh Thanh Community Agricultural, Service and Tourism Cooperative) said that she has been making banh it (a type of Vietnamese rice cake) for 13 years, making 500 to 1,000 cakes every day. Ms. Mon sells the cakes daily while also participating in community tourism with the local authorities.
"I earn about 300,000 - 400,000 VND per day from making cakes. Since I started doing both baking and tourism, I've found that baking not only provides income but also brings joy to people and promotes traditional Vietnamese rice cakes," Ms. Mon shared.
Ms. Le Thi Thu Tien, a tourist from Quang Ngai City, said that she has traveled to many places and discovered many interesting things, but she has never felt as close, familiar, and special as she does in Binh Thanh (Hanh Nhan commune). Here, she and her friends and relatives discovered how farmers wrap corn spring rolls and learned how to prepare banh it (a type of Vietnamese rice cake)... "At the same time, my children also got to experience making traditional dishes and visit the fruit orchards," she said.
Mr. Dinh Xuan Sam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Hanh District (Quang Ngai), said that the development of Binh Thanh village into a tourist village and the results achieved today is a new step based on leveraging the strengths of agriculture, increasing product value, and improving income for the local community.
Create a memorable experience.
With the results achieved so far and the dedicated participation of local farmers, the local authorities will continue to act as a facilitator for the Binh Thanh Community Agricultural, Service and Tourism Cooperative to develop a 3-star OCOP tourism product. This will include building experiential tourism products linked to the community in Binh Thanh village to create a unique experience for visitors.
