The Hanoi -Thai Nguyen railway line is paralyzed after severe flooding washed away approximately 50 meters of track in Trung Gia commune, Hanoi, disrupting railway transport operations.
The Hanoi- Thai Nguyen railway line had its foundation washed away by floodwaters.
The incident occurred at approximately 2 PM on October 9th, due to the impact of the ongoing historic floods in the northern mountainous provinces and the Red River Delta region. The incident took place at kilometer marker 17 in Trung Gia commune (formerly Soc Son district) on the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen railway line. Floodwaters submerged and eroded the railway embankment over a length of 700 meters to approximately 1 kilometer. The longest eroded section was about 35-40 meters, while the other two sections had approximately 15 meters of embankment eroded beneath the tracks. The strong floodwaters also washed the embankment down to a depth of 3-4 meters.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam, Director of Ha Thai Railway Joint Stock Company, confirmed the serious incident. "At 2 PM on the same day, due to the strong current of the flood, about 30 meters of the railway embankment in Trung Gia commune (Soc Son district, Hanoi) were completely swept away, leaving only the tracks above," Mr. Tam said.
Besides the main landslide site, the floodwaters also affected and damaged nearly 1km of other railway tracks in Trung Gia commune.
