The West is upgrading its support for Ukraine.

The Washington Post reported on September 12 that the US and UK have pledged to quickly consider Ukraine's request to ease restrictions on its use of Western weapons to attack Russian territory. This commitment comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his British counterpart David Lammy visit Kyiv on September 11, following a nine-hour train journey from Poland.

Ready to adjust

Speaking in Kyiv, Blinken said that the US has been prepared "from day one" to adjust its policy due to changing battlefield conditions in Ukraine. "We will continue to do this," he stressed. Although Britain and the US have not officially ratified the plan, Western media reports indicate that Britain has quietly approved it, while the US is finalizing related plans.

According to sources cited by POLITICO on September 12, the White House is finalizing plans to ease some restrictions on Ukraine's use of US-supplied weapons and to better defend itself against Russian missiles.

Meanwhile, The Guardian, citing anonymous British officials, reported that the UK had allowed Ukraine to use British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles for long-range attacks deep into Russian territory. Earlier reports indicated Ukraine had used Storm Shadow missiles to attack military targets in the Crimean Peninsula, a region annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014.

According to Reuters, the White House is facing increasing pressure from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers to ease restrictions on Ukraine's use of US-supplied weapons. Numerous lawmakers have submitted petitions amid President Blinken's visit to Kyiv.

America's new resolve

Besides considering allowing Ukraine to use weapons aid to attack Russian territory, the US also took a firm stance on Ukraine's accession to NATO. "NATO members came (to the summit in Washington D.C., USA) to make it clear that Ukraine's path to NATO membership is irreversible, and Ukraine is now on that path," the US Secretary of State emphasized at a press conference in Kyiv on September 11.

According to Ukrinform, Foreign Minister Blinken also reiterated that for the first time in NATO history, a command was established to help Ukraine move towards joining the alliance, and that command is now operational. "Everything is progressing, and it is important that during this time, Ukraine continues to push forward with the necessary reforms," the diplomat noted.

Recent moves by the US have provoked a strong reaction from Russia. On September 11, the Kremlin declared it would respond "appropriately" if the US lifted restrictions on Ukraine's use of US-supplied missiles.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov argued that the US statements represent an attempt at "psychological warfare," but will not change Russia's course and will instead create further risks for the US and its allies. More sharply, RT quoted former Kremlin advisor Sergey Karaganov as calling on Moscow to revise its nuclear doctrine because it no longer has a deterrent effect.

Massive aid for Ukraine

The Kyiv Independent reported on September 12th that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged $700 million in aid to Ukraine to support displaced civilians, restore electricity infrastructure, and clear landmines. In addition, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced a $781 million aid package to support Ukraine's humanitarian needs, energy, stabilization, and reconstruction. Furthermore, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Latvia has committed a new aid package to Ukraine, including armored personnel carriers, but other details and the total value remain unclear.
