PlayStation 3 receives a new update.

According to TechSpot, nearly two decades after the PlayStation 3 (PS3) was first launched, Sony has just shown that they haven't really "given up" on this legendary console with a new software update.

Accordingly, the 4.93 update for PS3 was officially released on the morning of March 19th, exactly one year after the release of version 4.92. Although the patch notes still bear the familiar, cryptic phrase: "This system software update improves system performance," the tech community understands that there are entirely different purposes behind it.

Many experts believe that Sony's actions are not necessarily a 'generous' gesture for a 20-year-old device. The main purpose of these annual patches is usually closely related to renewing the encryption key for Blu-ray players.

According to AACS copyright protection regulations, these product keys expire every 12-18 months. Without software updates, the PS3 will gradually lose its ability to read new Blu-ray discs. However, on the downside, installing the 4.93 update also means completely suppressing mods or custom firmware, making it difficult for the jailbroken community until they find a way to circumvent the rules.

If you own an original PS3 and still use it to watch Blu-ray movies, upgrading to version 4.93 is necessary. Sony states that this update requires at least 200 MB of free space. Without regular license renewals, your old hardware will soon become a decorative item as it will be unable to play modern multimedia content.

Although it still receives system updates, third-party services on the PS3 are gradually being phased out. Most recently, Netflix officially announced that it will cease supporting its app on the console starting March 3, 2026.

This is a rather sad end for an application that once had an interesting history on the PS3, when in 2009, due to an exclusivity agreement between Netflix and Xbox, PS3 users had to use a bootable Blu-ray disc to access the service before the application was officially available for download in 2010.
